A Bermuda Wedding Venue

With mild weather year-round, exotic pink-sandy beaches, and warm turquoise waters filled with reefs, shipwrecks and grottos, including one with a spa (more on that later!), Bermuda has drawn couples to its shores for centuries. Including my husband and I, who got engaged on this small, sub-tropical getaway and recently returned to celebrate a milestone anniversary. Discover why you should consider the destination and this Bermuda wedding venue.

Part of the island’s charm is its unique blend of British tradition and warm, island soul. Bermuda is Britain’s oldest Overseas Territory and thus, embraces cricket, afternoon tea and driving on the left side of the road. Queen Elizabeth II graces banknotes, men wear pressed shorts with blazers, knee-socks and dress shoes, and English is the island’s common language.

You’ll also find West Indian traditions like the Gombey, a popular costumed dance performed to rhythmic drumming, and pepper-rich dishes, like seafood stews, along with conch fritters and rice and beans.

And here’s something else: Bermuda has virtually no crowds and very few cars, because there are no car rentals for tourists and most people simply walk, ride mopeds or take the bus or ferry. What’s more, foreign fast-food outlets are illegal (a Kentucky Fried Chicken in Hamilton opened before the legislation was introduced), meaning there’s plenty of authentic island cooking.

A choice spot to stay is Rosewood Bermuda, which recently completed a $25 million renovation. All 92 guestrooms and suites have become glamorous retreats, most with oversize soaking tubs, wet bars, Italian bed linens, terraces and ocean views. Wander over to the Beach Club Restaurant with its hip new bar and posh cabanas to lounge by the pool, before lunching on French bistro fare like duck confit and cod meuniére. Savor Bermuda’s famous fish chowder invigorated with Bermuda’s Gosling’s Rum and Outerbridge’s Original Sherry Peppers at The Island Brasserie. Then there’s Tucker’s Bar – serving light snacks and rum, the island’s signature spirit.

In addition to its own private beach, Rosewood Bermuda has an 18-hole, par 70 golf course. It also has a spa that incorporates island botanicals from the resort’s garden into pampering options like the half-day “Sense of Bermuda Experience” complete with a massage, facial, mani-pedi and lunch.

“For couples planning a wedding or honeymoon, the reimagined Rosewood Bermuda is the ideal venue to celebrate,” says Managing Director, Paul Telford, also Chairman of the Bermuda Tourism Authority. “The property offers ample flexibility in terms of celebration venues; from the enhanced private beach club, to the golf club, to the new dining venues, including a new Conservatory Bar and Lounge, which means couples can curate a completely unique fête based on their preferences.”

For amorous off-premise adventures, Telford suggests seeing the Unfinished Church in St. George, a half-built, gothic cathedral with no ceilings or floors (other than grass). It’s one of the island’s most popular wedding spots (and a great place to snap a selfie). Another gem is Natura Spa at Grotto Bay Beach Resort and Spa, where you descend into the softly-lit Prospero’s Cave to luxuriate in private couple’s treatments in a tented area among the stalactites. There is “Lovers Lane” to visit near the gorgeous, plant-filled Paget Marsh Nature Reserve and the island’s horseshoe-shaped limestone structures called moongates. It’s tradition for newlyweds to step through for good luck.

Of course, you and your partner will create your own romantic traditions on this beautiful island, less than three hours by plane from most major East Coast cities. For me and my husband, it’s visiting the rock he proposed upon at a secluded beach. For you two? The possibilities are as endless as your love for each other.

Destination Celebration Essentials

No matter where you plan to host your event, there are some basics you will need. If you plan to have a destination wedding, but are planning other events close to home, these fun and totally customizable essentials will take your party to the next level.

Shatterproof Glassware

When our editor – Courtney Kellar – got engaged, we threw her a bridal shower that reflected her wedding destination (Scotland) with cute plaid details, thistle accented flower centerpieces, a lace photo backdrop and customized, shatterproof Champagne flutes from Tossware. The company was generous enough to send us sample flutes and allow us to go through the custom design process, so we could see for ourselves the quality and customer service they tout.

True to form, the design process was easy and the end result was an adorable take-home favor that the bride loved. The sturdy, yet shatterproof glasses are available in traditional stemmed flutes or stem-less, the choice is up to you. If Champagne flutes aren’t your jam, stem-less wine glasses, beer glasses and other products are available to customize.

The price is also reasonable, so it won’t break your décor budget. Prices start at $23.99 for a set of 12, 9 oz stem-less Champagne glasses.

Portable Bar

If you plan to host any type of party, having a stand-alone bar considerably elevates the feel of the celebration. The option of renting a bar provides a one-time solution and many times, what is delivered is a generic, beat up, sad looking situation. At first glance, it does the trick, but wouldn’t it be great to have something all your own? And to be able to store it away when it is not in use would be even more genius.

Enter Best of Times’ portable bar. We received a sample and put it to use immediately. We went with the “When I Sip, You Sip, We Sip” personalized wine message canvas wrap in black. You are able to fully customize the bar or select from their other pre-made designs.

The end result? Our party guests loved it! It was fairly easy to assemble and once it was ready to be stored after use, a quick wipe down and 10 minutes later it was in its storage bag, zipped up and in the garage.

The bar comes with a “food-grade insulated cooler,” three levels of “blow-mold plastic shelving” and a “polyester fabric wrap with UV protective coating,” as well as the rolling storage bag that’s just a tad bigger than a travel golf bag. If you choose to purchase the umbrella (highly recommended) and bar stools, those will cost you extra. The basic bar starts at $299.

Best of Times’ customer service is also on point – we called and had someone get back to us in less than 24 hours, quickly answering our question with kindness and urgency.

A Romeo and Juliet Themed Wedding

On top of making the journey for a Barcelona destination wedding, newlyweds Caroline and Stephane wanted to celebrate their big day with a Romeo and Juliet inspired celebration. “We just wanted to get married in Barcelona,” the bride says. “For the weather, the atmosphere and because Barcelona had a special meaning for both my husband and I.”

Overall, the couple’s guests were very excited about the travel. “A wedding is already a special occasion but when it gives people the opportunity to spend more time together, it makes it even more special,” the couple says. However, they did receive mixed reactions to their children-free rule.

To bring her Romeo and Juliet theme to life, Caroline says she spent hours searching for the perfect venue until she found the abandoned Cuban castle, the Castell Ben Viure. “The only issue is that the castle wasn’t equipped, so we had to bring our own generators for the caterer, the lighting, the music etc.,” the pair says. “We knew it was a risk but it was so worth it. That’s why it is key to work with the best professionals, even if it’s hard to trust strangers at the beginning of the process.”

Overall, the newlyweds enjoyed the planning process but admit that it can be frustrating for those unable to visit the location beforehand. Their wedding planner helped with the process so Caroline and Stephane were fully involved. “I think it was easy and pleasant because our wedding planner was super reactive, involved and connected,” they say. “She would share everything she saw, liked and visited for us, sending photos or videos.”

To help with their theme, the couple got creative and crafted some of their own wedding decor, including some references to the Romeo and Juliet films. “I organized a little workshop for my bridesmaids to create their own flowers crowns, and my mum created ten cross-shaped neon signs using wooden sticks and led wires,” the bride says. “It was a nod to Baz Lurhman’s movie.”

Communicating with vendors was also done easily through the help of their wedding planner and communicating services like Skype and WhatsApp. “The only issue we had was with a vendor who handed us their quote one week before the wedding,” the pair says. “We had to negotiate until the last minute because it was way too expensive but essential for the party.”

Despite some pricy services, Caroline and Stephane believe they spent less money on their destination wedding than if they had it at home. “Barcelona can offer great value for money,” they say. “There were so many details and surprises that our friends believed we spent double the budget.”

Not only did the newlyweds pay less for their destination wedding but they agree that everything would have been entirely different. “We wouldn’t have spent the entire week together if the wedding had taken place near home,” the couple says. “Also, Barcelona’s palm trees did added a lot by creating a magical tropical atmosphere.”

For others planning a destination wedding, the pair recommends planning at least a year ahead and encourage your guests to arrive early to spend time with all of them. “Be demanding and don’t feel bad when saying that something isn’t good enough,” the bride says. “Of course the money will impact your options but don’t forget it is your wedding and it happens only once in your life.”

4 Reasons to Hire a Wedding Planner

Destination weddings are on the rise and there are a few really good reasons why. They are more intimate, they are often cost-effective and you can stay and play after your wedding is over and enjoy your honeymoon. Planning a wedding from afar can seem like a daunting task, but when paired with an experienced planner, it’ll be smooth sailing from start to finish!

Four reasons why you should hire an experienced planner for your destination wedding:

  1. Vendor Selection & Sourcing

We will take the stress of sourcing your entire vendor team off your plate! From venue selection to photographers, floral design and hair & makeup, we find reputable professionals in your destination location and act as your liaison. We’ll book them, communicate design needs, finalize contracts and coordinate arrival times when the big day comes.

  2. Timelines

With hundreds of successfully executed weddings and events under our belts, we are experts at keeping everything from planning milestones to vendor payments on track. Whether you choose to enjoy a long engagement or a quick trip down the aisle, we know how quickly vendors should be chosen, at what point final guest counts need to be communicated to the caterer and when final payments need to be made. Save yourself the stress of missing deadlines, let us take the lead here for you!

  3. Travel Plans

Planners may not be travel agents, but you can bet we can refer you to a great one! We often team up with fabulous agents who can offer our couples great deals on flights, hotel accommodations and can even help plan special excursions for your honeymoon and room blocks for your guests.

  4. Event Management

Chances are your venue can offer you a day-of wedding coordinator should you choose to forgo a planner, but you’ll want someone handling business for you that you trust, who you are familiar with, who knows the ins and outs of your vendors, your desired design and your wishes for how the day should unfold.

Your big day should be worry-free and the team at Michelle Durpetti Events is here to ensure it is! Hiring experienced planners means you get to benefit from the fabulous industry relationships we’ve built and the expertise we’ve developed over the course of many years of perfecting our craft. Now, let’s get planning!

A Georgia Destination Wedding

Savannah, Georgia, was the ideal destination wedding location for newlyweds David and Claire because they got to celebrate with members of their family who were already living there. “Our friends were honestly excited to visit since they’ve heard about it from me for so many years,” the couple says.

Not only did moving the location down south cost less for the pair, but their familiarity with the city allowed them to better plan and understand how their big day would turn out. “Claire knew the city and its options so well that it didn't take us long to narrow in on the flow of the ceremony and the reception,” the groom says.

Despite their established knowledge of Savannah, David and Claire still had their challenges when it came to planning the event. However, with the help of family, they were able to get all of their details solidified on time.

“Claire had to travel down to Savannah several times for long weekends in order to look at napkins or flowers in person,” says David. “But it ended up being so much fun, it didn't matter. Planning a wedding is crazy no matter what! You might as well have it somewhere that you love.”

While they were primarily their own wedding planners, the newlyweds say they hired a coordinator for their big day to ensure everything went as planned. Along with organizing the event themselves, the couple and their families also made some crafty DIYs, including flower arrangements and escort cards.

Travel logistics went smoothly for David and Claire, especially because they were able to use Claire’s moms house as a hub for guests when they arrived. “Because Savannah is fairly low-key, people felt pretty comfortable and relaxed the moment they got there," the couple says. "We also provided guests with ceremony and reception information ASAP so that they could book their accommodations.”

Although the pair ended up spending less than they would have back home, they still felt it was important to splurge on certain aspects of the wedding rather than others. “For instance, we didn't want to spend money on a physical invitation or on a cake because Dave doesn't really like cake,” says the bride. “But we did go all out on the dress and the suit and securing a spot for an afterparty with plenty of pizza. You just have to choose what really matters to you.”

All of the hard work put into planning paid off for the couple, especially considering the fun memories they all shared. “It was challenging at times, but the scenery, the culture, the food and the atmosphere made it all worth it,” they say. “Our friends and family were excited to learn more about a place that is and has been so special to us for so long.”

From their experience, the newlyweds learned to take in every moment and enjoy being with those they love. “Don't sweat the small stuff because it honestly all works out. You are surrounded by your closest family and friends sending you off on a beautiful love journey.”
