Maui Tropical Plantation Wedding

Today's couple's dish is all about DIY projects and advice from a couple who decided to wed on Hawaii's beautiful island of Maui. Melissa and Patrick's decision to host a destination wedding came naturally to them – their family and friends are spread throughout the globe and Maui was easy for guests to get to, and it had a good variety of fun things to do, e.g. beach, hiking, shopping, etc. As the couple's Q&A overflowed with helpful, honest advice, we thought you may like to hear directly from them!

Q: Why did you choose to do a destination wedding?
A: We both live in an area without any close family nearby. Patrick’s family is all in southern CA and Nevada. Melissa’s family is primarily on the East Coast and Asia. Plus, Melissa went to college in Europe and lived in NYC for a number of years, so most of her friends are based around Europe and in New York. Meaning, having a destination wedding in Maui would actually be more convenient for a large number of our guests as opposed to having it in NYC (where Melissa is from), Denver (where we currently live) or Lake Tahoe area (where Patrick is from).

Q: Did you use any resources when planning your destination wedding that you feel would be helpful to other couples?
A: We found the best resources came from our vendors. For example, we hired our DJ based on our photographer’s recommendation and he was AWESOME!

Q: Did you include any DIY projects in your wedding/reception? If so, please describe them.
A: In thinking about things now, we had quite a few DIY projects – sometimes to save money and other times because we wanted to be creative. For example, Melissa made her veil – I went to a fabric shop, bought some nice tulle, and googled how to make a veil (spoiler: it’s ridiculously easy). And then I somehow had the bright idea to make things harder for myself by cutting up lace fabric into appliques and sewing each individual piece onto the tulle fabric.

Other DIY projects included:

  • Paper plane escort cards: Melissa saw this idea on Pinterest and thought it would be cute since everyone came to Maui on an airplane.
  • Bridesmaids bouquets: We thought we should keep things simple.
  • Gold pineapple centerpieces: Because the venue grows pineapples and used to be a sugar plantation, and Hawaii used to be one of the largest exporters of pineapples, we wanted to pay homage to that past by spray painting fresh pineapples gold (again, an idea Melissa saw on Pinterest).
  • Invitations: Because most people eventually throw away invitations, we did not feel it was necessary to literally throw hundreds of dollars into the trash. As such, we bought a template from Etsy, printed the invitations via Costco and then Melissa spray painted the backs gold, created a vellum jacket for the invitation suite and created envelope liners from cut-up gold/black/green pineapple wrapping paper. Note: this took a lot longer than I had anticipated. In the future, I intend to simplify any invitation DIY projects.
  • Wedding Programs: Similar to the invitations, these are typically thrown out after the fact. As such, Melissa googled creative ideas and came up with a flag template, which she then adapted for our wedding colors. Note: this was really cheap and easy to make. I bought ribbon on sale from Hobby Lobby and wooden dowels, and with the use of a glue gun, made some pretty cute wedding program flags.

Q: What were the travel logistics like for your guests? Did you run into issues and how did you resolve them?
A: Because we were not hosting the wedding at a hotel, no hotel was willing to offer a decently discounted rate for our guests, so we told our guests they would have to fend for themselves. Everyone was fine with this idea anyway because it created more flexibility for groups of friends to share Airbnb's, etc. and vacation together.

Q: Overall, do you have any special advice you would like to share to our readers to help prepare them for their day?
A: In order of magnitude:
1) If you can, go on a scouting trip to find your venue. We did and let’s just say there are some very talented photographers out there. Case in point, one popular venue looked phenomenal based on photos found online but in person, was located right off the main road and sandwiched between two old apartment buildings… neither of which came through on photos.
2) Ask around for recommendations then verify those recommendations with past clients and/or other vendors. Case in point, we almost booked a venue but in mentioning it to another vendor, she cautioned us not to give them our deposit because that particular venue location had seen several bankruptcies over the years – meaning, although the venue was beautiful, no business operating there had been able to stay in business for longer than a couple of years, so there was a strong likelihood of our being SOL.
3) Find a good wedding planner or coordinator who is responsive, hands-on and will act as your advocate.
4) If you’re not getting a response, pick up the phone and call.
5) Give yourself plenty of time for any DIY projects. Also, simplify any DIY projects, especially if you have a full-time job!

Wedding Toasting 101

Have you ever been to a wedding and listened to toasts that made you cringe in embarrassment for the speaker (and the couple being toasted)? There are so many ways a wedding toast can go astray — unfortunate references to exes, overly embarrassing comments about the honorees, a toast-giver who’s had one too many cocktails to bolster their courage, a speech that drones on and on. Fortunately, serial groomsman Pete Honsberger has compiled a book showing us exactly how to craft the perfect wedding speech – Wedding Toasts 101!

Wedding Toasts 101 is an all-inclusive guide to everything you need for the perfect speech, including:

  • Questions to ask yourself as you write your toast
  • Prompts to get your creative juices flowing
  • Tips on dealing with reception annoyances (is there an echo in here?)
  • The dos and don’ts of a great toast
  • A complete wedding toast checklist
  • And more!

Pete’s light-hearted, humorous approach will give even the most nervous public speaker all the tools he or she needs for writing and presenting the best toast ever. With a gifty package and low price point, Wedding Toasts 101 makes a perfect gift for a bride- or groom-to-be to give to members of their wedding party.

Don't forget the perfect wedding gift for the special couple you'll be toasting: flutes! We suggest you consider choosing one of the many options offered by the luxury brand, Michael Aram. Michael Aram is an award-winning American artist who has dedicated his career to craft-based design. "Michael is highly inspired by his surroundings and often represents objects that have meaning for him, especially those that might otherwise be overlooked in the everyday," the company explains in a recent press release. "Nature is his biggest source of inspiration, as is the handmade process." These are the glasses the couple will be toasting with after your stellar speech, so it's only natural that they come from you!

Real Costa Rica Wedding

From the start of the wedding planning process, Nick and Paola knew they wanted to be married somewhere that didn’t require much in the way of decor due to the beauty of its surroundings. Truly, however, there was little to contemplate. Marrying in Costa Rica was an absolute for bride Paola whose mother was born there and where she spent every summer as a child.

"I remember being upset because I would miss summers back home with my friends, but as I got older, I realized it wasn’t me that was 'missing out'," Paola says. "Shortly after Nick and I started dating, I took him to Costa Rica and he instantly fell in love. Costa Rica never had any real competition."

Nick and Paola's guests were thrilled with their decision and looked forward to the trip as soon as they received the news. "
The majority of our New York friends and family were waiting on our wedding to finally cross Costa Rica off their travel bucket list," the couple says. With the easy part behind them, the two could face what many destination wedding couples may call the 'uphill climb' of choosing to wed away from home. Paola, knowing she wanted help with the heavy lifting of planning, decided to hire someone onsite to be the couple's eyes and ears.

"How people have a destination wedding without hiring someone...is beyond me. Maybe I’m a bit more nitpicky, but hiring Barbara [of Four Nineteen Weddings] was key in executing what we envisioned," the bride says. The couple also needed someone to help them narrow down what was truly important to them - as Paola admits Nick had to put a limit on her time spent perusing Pinterest "because the wedding theme would change with every new gorgeous image I saw."

The couple's ideal theme of "less is more" helped Paola create specific visions for the details. For example, the couple wanted cloth napkins with minimalistic linear patterns and after no luck finding them, Paola grew tired of searching. "We bought different black and white fabrics at Jo-Ann Fabric & Craft Store and enlisted my mom to sew 90 napkins. I took a mini calligraphy course and did all the calligraphy on the marble tile place settings. I was surprised at how many guests kept them!" the bride says.

For guest's travel logistics, the couple tried to lay everything out as clear as possible on their wedding website and by word-of-mouth. To ease potential worry from guests, Nick and Paola decided to schedule a room block at a nearby hotel. They also provided transportation to-and-from the reception space for those that required it. "As clear and insistent as we were," the couple says, "there were still guests that missed deadlines or needed extra hand-holding." In hindsight, the bride says, "You can't please everyone – so don't stress about it."

Nick and Paola wish to leave this little gem of advice for anyone considering a destination wedding: "believe the hype." Your destination wedding day will truly be one of the best days of your life. "...so take it all in," the couple says.

Getting Married on Sea Island

A Real Golden Isles Wedding

New Yorkers Rachel Tulchin and Kevin Bailey were married on a beautiful late September day under the sprawling live oak trees on Sea Island. With the iconic Cloister Garden as their background, guests witnessed the couple's special outdoor ceremony, complete with a surprise performance by a local gospel choir.

From the Friday night welcome reception at Ocean Forest to the late-night dancing at their Saturday nuptials, the Bailey-Tulchin wedding was a truly magical, timeless and elegant event with memories to last a lifetime.

We recently sat down with Rachel and Kevin to learn more about their special day and their experience planning their wedding in the Golden Isles.

Why did you choose the Golden Isles for your big event?

We chose Sea Island because we've spent a lot of wonderful, quality time there together and it's special to us. The location was a nice place to gather our friends and families from New York, Texas and beyond. Both of us were hoping for a wedding where our guests could relax and getaway for the weekend, and spend time getting to know one another.

What was your experience planning from afar?

The Sea Island & Ocean Forest teams and our local vendors were true professionals. They made everything easy given their vast experience, tasteful advice, and friendly, helpful demeanor. There were so many times they went over and above what we were expecting to make sure we had the perfect lasting memories of our wedding weekend, down to every last detail.

What else did your guests do during the weekend?

We knew our guests would enjoy exploring the Golden Isles on their own. They spent time walking the beach, enjoying town, golfing, renting bikes, relaxing at the Beach Club, and enjoying the local cuisine.

What would you tell other couples considering a destination wedding here?

You can't go wrong with an event in the Golden Isles. There are so many great venues and vendors to help create a wedding that reflects who you are as a couple and the type of wedding you envision. It's an area that is peaceful, relaxing, family-friendly, and beautiful. We love coming back to visit this very special corner of the world.

Whether you’ve always wanted a beautiful beach wedding or a quiet garden ceremony, the Golden Isles of Georgia has so many iconic and picturesque locations for your big day. Learn more about the area and the many wonderful vendors who are here and ready to make your dreams come true.

Incorporating the Color of the Year

6 Ways to Include Classic Blue in Your Destination Wedding & Honeymoon

Pantone's color of 2020 is...drumroll, please...classic blue! A hue elegant and simple - fashion companies everywhere have introduced products dawning the color. Naturally, what the fashion industry does almost always affects popular styles, themes and colors of weddings. So, if you are considering incorporating classic blue into your destination wedding, today is your day! From the small details to the main components we'll tell you how best to include classic blue in your event away according to your preferences.

1. Stationery

Invitations are a great way to introduce the theme to your guests. Consider colorizing the font to classic blue or add a little touch on the inside of the envelope. The possibilities of incorporating the color in stationery are truly endless.

2. Groom's Suit

Want to be crazy about your sharp dressed man? Replace the normal grey or black suit for a classic blue color. Perfect for outdoor weddings, your guy and his best mates will pop out amongst the outstanding colors of the natural backdrop.

3. Bridesmaid's Outfits

A phrase you rarely hear, if ever, is "oh, I don't look good in blue." Hopefully, this is true for your girls. From our experience, they'll likely love you for choosing this classic blue color for their gowns!

4. Welcome Gifts

Kahina Giving Beauty Essaouira Perfume Oil ($78)

This blue bottled perfume makes the perfect welcome gift for bridesmaids and/or mothers. With notes of rose, sandalwood, herbaceous geranium and lavender - all accented by a bright note of petitgrain, this scent is a great gift for your girls to wear on the big day. This grounding scent will bring you closer to the connectivity your guests are craving this year!

Skandinavisk Hav Collection ($13 to $88)

Scandinavian for sea, HAV offers an impression of the nordic coastline where cold seas meet scents of rugosa rose and hawthorne from the shore. Guests can enjoy this collection as a hotel room fragrance, or add to their body care routine for soft, delicately scented skin. Imagine walking down the aisle past all the lovely smelling folks... heavenly! This collection is available at CieLuxe.com.

5. Tablescapes

Image Sources: Infinite EventsAdeline + Grace Photography and Stoneblossom Florals

The simplicity and elegance of this year's color looks stunning against white linens and gold details like pictured above. Like stationery, the opportunity for color and creative design in tablescapes is endless. So whether you decide to go for some classic blue florals or antique British breakfast plates with intricate blue patterns - you're sure to feel like royalty surrounded in this color.

6. Honeymoon In Blue

Now that the wedding festivities have ended, your feet are crying to be free of heels. Girl, throw on some cute blue flats and strut to the airport gate with your new spouse! Perhaps these Farra Pointed Toe Flats will suit your fancy.

Surrounded by nature's most beautiful display of classic blue, open ocean, it only seems natural to carry the color from the wedding to your tropical honeymoon. We suggest giving Heidi Klein's 2020 swim collection a try, specifically the MALTA style which features our beloved 2020 color of the year! The fabric of the bikinis is oh-so-soft and strong, and the lightweight cover-ups are adorable enough to wear to brunch on the beach with your boo.

Make sure to pack a sexy outfit for a night on the town or for a fine dining experience as newlyweds. Not much is sexier than silk. Consider dawning a Lori Cut Out Midi Dress in Stretch Silk Satin with Adjustable Slittasteful from Ladaire.

From sending out invitations to relaxing on your honeymoon and everything in between, you can bring this year's classic blue with you!

Say “I Do” Like Stars in Costa Rica

Have you ever wanted to celebrate like a celebrity – dance like Beyoncé, tie the knot like Kelly Rowland, vacation like a Kardashian? Villas and private estates around the world are favorites among stars and starlets, in part because of the privacy they offer (a honeymoon must) and for the communal comfort of vacationing with friends and family in a residential environment. A destination wedding brings people together for an extended celebration, and doing so in a home that sleeps the majority of your guests means the party never stops.

That’s where Villa Manzu on Costa Rica’s Peninsula Papagayo comes in. Like many celebs before you, you can arrive by helicopter if you choose and be greeted by a small family of welcoming staff that cater to your every wedding whim. From a chef who sources local ingredients to the mixologist who you’ll quickly call a friend (and makes a mean pisco sour), your surroundings will feel like the fantasy you’ve dreamed of. The estate is equipped with eight suites impeccably designed down to the last detail with high tech accessories and floor-to-ceiling windows and doors at every turn. The balcony-clad rooms are so inviting it’s hard to leave, but if you must, sunsets on the point where ceremonies are held shouldn’t be missed.

While the property is perched above the bay, ideal for an intimate outdoor reception on the terrace, the beach club rights below give guests the best of both worlds. But who needs the club when you have access to the villa’s new speedboat for fishing, whale shark chasing or a stop on the shore for a beach barbecue with lobster, hammocks and shore games in between courses. The team at Villa Manzu curates the experience as you wish – from wedding day flowers to group activities in the kitchen or kids’ adventures learning about local wildlife. The on-property spa situated under a waterfall is even inclusive when you sleep here (and comes in handy after a long morning hike).

From a wine room with bottles for the taking to billiards, pools and bars galore, there’s too much to partake in to make just a weekend of it.  So snuggle into the theater for a wedding slideshow and celebrate with your closest friends for a week or more to do it all. You won’t be short of memories at this destination wedding haven.

Say “I do” without Paying a Dime

Plan a Luxurious Destination Wedding

A destination wedding in a stunning tropical locale is a dream for many couples. Yet, sadly, this incredible experience shared with loved ones stays just that: a dream that seems out of reach.

But there is a way for couples to have their wedding cake and eat it too. For a minimum stay, Palace Resorts offers at their luxurious all-inclusive resorts in Mexico or Jamaica. They can enjoy a romantic beach wedding or in a gazebo overlooking the ocean, complete with elegant décor and seating for up to 30 guests.

And it gets even better the more people are invited to celebrate their love. Group benefits include unlimited complimentary nights and room upgrades. And, depending on the number of rooms booked, couples receive complimentary cocktail receptions and private events.

Also, couples are eligible for a wedding credit of $20 per room per night. This credit can be used for essentials such as bouquets, floral décor, and their choice of wedding cake.

And how can couples entice more family and friends to join them? Palace Resorts gives them three good reasons:

1)    All-inclusive luxury: Exquisite à la carte cuisine, top-shelf drinks, a variety of activities, spectacular entertainment every night, and so much more are part of every stay.
2)    Kids & Teens Stay Free at our family-friendly resorts: Guests can turn the time before or after your big event into a family vacation to remember.
3)    Up to $1,500 USD in Resort Credit. Every room receives a Resort Credit, which can be used toward land and sea tours, indulging spa treatments, rounds of golf and more.

So, couples can experience an unforgettable wedding ceremony complete with endless ocean views, a cocktail reception and other private events, delicious wedding cake, flowers, and so much more—and they can enjoy it all for free.
