A Mexico Destination Wedding
Wed, 30 Jan 2019 09:00:00 GMT

Who doesn’t love sunny weather and white sand beaches? Newlyweds Samantha and Nick surely do, which is why they chose to hold their Mexican destination wedding on the lush coast of Punta Mita.

“Our family and friends loved the idea of a weeklong destination wedding,” says the couple.

After touring some villas there, Samantha and Nick quickly felt a connection. “The villas were uniquely designed with incredible views and beach access,” they say.

Additionally, the location as a whole held interest for them, which made it even easier to decide where they would spend their special day.

“I’ve always loved the culture of Mexico, and the first time Nick and I visited Punta Mita we loved everything about it,” says the bride.

Although Mexico is quite a long journey from their hometown, the newlyweds admit that getting to their destination was not an issue.

“Transportation was made easy for everyone with coordinated pick-up and drop-off to and from the airport,” says Samantha and Nick.

However, the couple was able to visit their wedding location more than once to coordinate and get a better idea of the final result, which helped with planning both the details and the bigger picture.

“We had the opportunity to visit Punta Mita twice for a few days each time,” they say. “We met with vendors, such as florists and caterers, to go over details months before our big day. It was a great hands-on experience, getting to select everything from our menu to decor.”

If the newlyweds had their wedding closer to home, they say that it likely would not have been as magical of an experience for them or their guests.

“With weddings, you always have a challenge of whether it be in your backyard or overseas,” says Samantha. “We were up for the challenge of doing something a little different and off the beaten path. We knew what we were wanting from the beginning, and we were lucky that Punta Mita had a lot to offer.”

From the couple’s experience, hiring a wedding planner was most helpful when it came to narrowing down ideas and coordinating with vendors. Additionally, the bride says that hiring someone to help organize everything can allow you to get a better understanding of your priorities.

“It is easy to change your mind with so many wonderful ideas out there, but wedding planners do a good job with knowing the vision and what is important and what is not,” she says.

“My best piece of advise for future brides would be to just have fun with the whole experience,” she says. “Try not to stress out too much about little details, make a list of priorities and just remember that in the end, everything will be perfect and stunning just like you envisioned.”

By the end of the day, the couple says that trusting your wedding planner and remembering to enjoy every moment can make everything go more smoothly.

“If for some reason something doesn't go as planned on your big day, it’s going to be ok,” Samantha says. “Just laugh it off instead of crying, because you don’t want to mess up your makeup!”

St Lucia Destination Wedding Venue

Are you looking for a destination wedding or honeymoon location that’s equal parts relaxation and adventure? On the Caribbean island of St. Lucia, you can have the best of both worlds – beautiful beaches and rugged rainforest.

Despite being farther south than Caribbean honeymoon hotspots like Anguilla and Nevis, St. Lucia makes for a more convenient travel itinerary. You can skip the puddle jumper and interisland ferry since there are direct flights into Hewanorra International Airport (UVF) from most major U.S. East Coast cities.

I’ve traveled extensively throughout the Caribbean and thought I had completed my love affair with this part of the world. However, St. Lucia had eluded me and the rugged, volcanic Piton Mountains were calling my name. After landing at UVF, my partner and I exited customs to find our pre-arranged shuttle to the Marigot Bay Resort and Marina. Marigot Bay is located on the northwest side of the island about an hour’s drive from the airport. It’s the location that makes this particular resort on St. Lucia special. It’s huddled on a lush, tropical bay with a marina filled with sleek sailboats and yachts.

Marigot Bay Resort boasts outstanding service and complimentary amenities like snacks by the pool and an afternoon in-room treat like ice-cold Piton beers and fresh cookies. If you’re looking to wet your whistle, be sure to book a rum tasting at the Rum Cave with Ron. If you’re lucky, he’ll whip up one of his famous “St. Lucian Spiced Lagers.” Pair your beverage at the Pool Bar with a Bonito Tuna Maki Roll or Aguachile Ceviche. Also, kick up the romance by booking a private dinner for two in the hotel’s Tree House.

If you get the urge to get out and see the sites, a drive around the island to the Piton Mountains is a must. If you’re in really great shape and are looking for a honeymoon challenge, you can book the Gros Piton Hike. To get the adrenaline pumping without the will of a marathoner, you could also opt for zip-lining, sailing or snorkeling.

No matter how you choose to spend your time, take the St. Lucian motto to heart and “Let Her Inspire You."

How to Properly Pack a Suit

How to Properly Pack a Suit

Traveling for your destination wedding? Discover how to pack your suit for the plane and avoid wrinkling! Is your groom's attire all figured out? Do you or your groom have his suit or tuxedo properly tailored, tie and pocket square purchased, shoes shined? Great. Now you just have to get it all to your destination in one piece, right? For many guys, the sheer thought of somehow cramming that nice new woolen suit into a small suitcase invariably leads to one big question: how is it going to look on the other end? Fortunately, by understanding a little about common suit fabrics and learning some easy packing techniques, your suit or tuxedo should look just fine when you touch down at your destination. And just in case it doesn't, I'm going to explain a few things you can do to help get those wrinkles out.

1. What you should know about fabrics

Most quality suits are going to be made of wool. However, not all wool is the same. Some fine woolens are actually quite wrinkle free, naturally. Whereas, other woolen fibers, not so much. Regardless, your wool suit is probably going to wrinkle a little after being inside your suitcase, and that's okay.

Cotton suits, on the other hand, can be a great option for destination weddings in warm locales. They are quite breathable and tend to have a bit of a vacation feel to them, when compared to a more dressy looking wool. But, the wrinkling in a cotton suit is going to be a little more stubborn than wool.

And then there's linen. While a suit made in a linen fabric is a beautifully breathable cloth and can feel like you're wearing your vacation, oh boy does it wrinkle! It will probably wrinkle a bit during your photos, let alone the flight out to your destination.

2. How to pack your suit or tuxedo

If you're checking your luggage, then go big! There are a lot of great suitcases on the market today that allow you to hang your jacket and pant on a hanger and then just fold once. This is the way to go, if you're able.

But, I understand that today many of us are more-or-less carry-on only people, wedding or no wedding. So, here's what I recommend you do, and I admit it is a little counter-intuitive, but it works!

Turn the jacket inside out and pop the shoulders out Fold the jacket in half, lengthwise Then fold again, the other way Lightly pack on top of your other items and don't compress

I fully recognize that it doesn't make much sense to be turning your jacket inside out to avoid wrinkling, but it's actually a great way to avoid compressing the shoulder area on a man's jacket, thereby mitigating wrinkling. As we discussed above, all fabrics wrinkle, but using this technique will certainly minimize the wrinkles that you do have.

3. At your destination

After you've checked into your hotel at your beautiful destination and it's time to unzip your bag, take a deep breath and recognize that everything is going to be okay!

Remove your suit jacket and pant, hold them upright and gently shake out. Maybe pat down the sleeves, jacket back, and the pant legs a bit to help work out the big wrinkles. Give your suit or tuxedo plenty of room in the closet and just let it hang there for as long as possible. I think that you'll be pleasantly surprised how over time, gravity will take care of most wrinkling in woolen suits. But, if your wedding is in a few short hours or if your cotton/linen suit is heavily wrinkled, here's what you can do:

When staying at a large resort, there might be a dry cleaning service available. Take advantage of it and request a light steaming. In a pinch, you can always hang your suit inside the bathroom and turn the shower on. While this probably won't alleviate significant wrinkling, it will certainly help.  If you want to take the initiative, you can find a nice hand-held steamer on Amazon for under $30. They are lightweight and smaller than you think; pack one in your bag and you'll be all set! 4. Packing the accessories

Roll your socks up and pack them into your dress shoes, as they can be a lightweight substitute for shoes trees! Smaller accessories like cuff links and tie bars can easily get lost, so be sure to put them in a zippered pocket or zip lock baggie to keep them organized. As for your neck tie or bow tie, roll it up loosely and pack it in a small box. For business travel, I would usually just say pack your tie inside one of your packed dress shoes, but for your wedding, don't take any chances on creasing and use a small box for travel.

Speaking of shoes, if you've shined them to perfection and/or don't plan to do so at your destination, simply wrap a T-shirt around your dress shoes to help keep that shine during travel.

As for your dress shirt, it will wrinkle no matter what you do! But cotton dress shirts are easy. Just give yourself some time to iron it out prior to your ceremony.

5. Wrap up

Do you feel a little better about packing your suit for your destination wedding now? Once you understand a little bit about how common suit fabrics behave and the practical things you can do to mitigate wrinkling, you can rest easy knowing you're going to look sharp on your big day! A New York Destination Wedding

A New York Destination Wedding

Jason and June wanted a luxurious castle wedding with an intimate guest list. But since Jason’s parents had never flown before, the couple had to seek out the perfect venue that was in driving distance. One of June’s bridesmaids suggested the Lyndhurst Mansion in Tarrytown, New York and the couple instantly fell in love with the idea of a New York destination wedding.

The couple was set on having a small guest count to ensure their big day was spent with their closest friends and family. “We wanted to be surrounded by the love of the people most precious to us rather than friends of friends that we barely knew,” says the bride. “A couple of people were upset they didn’t get a plus one, but we had a very limited guest count due to the intimate setting, so we had to stay strong, say no and hope our loved ones would respect our decision.” Otherwise, most friends and family were thrilled to make the New York-based wedding into a vacation.

Jason and June ended up saving money by having a destination wedding since they had a smaller guest list. “Having a destination wedding enabled us to have the wedding of our dreams on a more affordable scale,” says the bride.

The couple spent a lot of time and hard work planning for their destination wedding but says it was worth it. The couple primarily relied on email and phone conversations to communicate with their vendors from afar and occasionally had to travel to New York. “It was a lot of work and at the time it felt like a full-time job,” says the couple.

Jason and June decided to hire a wedding planner to help organize all the details for their special day. The bride also purchased books and relied on Instagram to find and research local vendors. “Rather than searching tons of websites that were often difficult to navigate, I was able to look them up on Instagram and see a snapshot of their best work in a matter of seconds,” says June.

June kept herself very busy with a list of do-it-yourself projects before the wedding. She made the wedding invitations, programs, menus, place cards, gift tags, welcome bags and some hand-painted items for the reception. Impressively, the bride was also the designer of her wedding gown. Other things the couple thoughtfully included into their wedding were origami rose ornaments with a printed love poem. The bride’s departed father wrote the poem and the couple included it as one of the readings during the ceremony.

The bride has some advice for other couples considering planning a destination wedding. “Stay true to yourselves. Take a deep breath and remember this is your day,” says June. “When the day finally arrives, cherish every moment!”

A Dana Point Destination Wedding

A Dana Point Destination Wedding

With family living all over the world, it can be tricky to find a wedding location that works for everyone. However, for newlyweds Pavandeep and Akal, a Dana Point destination wedding ended up being a perfect fit.

“We picked a location with a nearby international airport, which made things easier for our family flying from all over,” says the couple.

Like many others, Pavandeep and Akal’s top suggestion for those planning a destination wedding is to hire a wedding planner who you feel comfortable with. None of the newlywed’s immediate family live in California, so trusting their wedding planner to coordinate guest details was a huge help.

In terms of coordinating with the vendors, Pavandeep and Akal agree that their wedding planner helped them stay organized through the process.

“She would also set up conference calls periodically along the way,” says the couple. “She had an awesome google sheet that had a timeline of things all the way up to the week of the wedding.”

Because Pavandeep and Akal knew they wanted the occasion to be outdoors, they considered the time of year and decided to have their wedding in April.

“California’s weather is typically perfect that time of year,” says the pair.

Overall, they enjoyed their Dana Point destination wedding and the beautiful setting it provided.

5 Tips for Selecting Wedding Attire

5 Tips for Selecting Wedding Attire

Selecting the attire for your destination wedding is an important step in setting the tone for the overall look of your big day. Your gown should always reflect your individual style, as well as the aesthetic and formality of the wedding. Identifying the theme of your wedding requires inspiration. I like to recommend that you use your venue as a muse for your wedding fashion. The level of formality, the color and even the fabric should all be influenced by where your nuptials are taking place. This photo shoot was done in iconic Venice, Italy.

1. Dress for the Climate

When selecting your gown, take into consideration the climate of your wedding location. Fabric weight can be an important factor if you are getting married in a tropical location.

Some fabrics to consider for a hot, humid climate are organza, chiffon, tulle or lace (particularly, Chantilly lace).

Brides think they need to avoid a ball gown or fuller silhouettes if they are getting married in a warm climate. This is not the case, as long as the weight of the fabric is appropriate. Another option is to wear a fuller silhouette for the ceremony and then change into a sheath or short gown for the reception. If you are so in love with your gown that you can’t bear to take it off, then consider a detachable train or a full overskirt that you would wear over your gown for the ceremony and then remove for the reception.

2. Prepare Before you Shop

Selecting a wedding gown is often one of the first steps a bride takes as she embarks on the journey of her engagement. Finding the perfect gown is exciting, but can sometimes be confusing and overwhelming. There are a few things that should take place before you begin shopping. First, you should set a budget. Included in your overall wedding budget should be costs for your attire. This should include your gown, veil, shoes, accessories and alterations. When deciding where to shop for your dress, ensure that the bridal store has gowns that fall within your budget. Next, you need to have your wedding date and venue secured prior to shopping. It is next to impossible to select your gown when you can’t visualize where you will be getting married.

3. Choose the Right Shoe

Shoe selection becomes even more important when you are planning a destination wedding. Consider the location of your ceremony and where your photographs will be taken when deciding on your shoe style. If your destination has cobblestone streets or grass, you may want to consider a wedge or stacked heel. This style of shoe adds the height that many brides appreciate, but will also provide stability.

If you are getting married on a beach, but want to change to a heel for your reception, have the seamstress hem the dress to your heel height. You will most likely have to hold up the front of your gown on the beach anyway.

4. To Veil or Not to Veil

Wearing a veil is a very personal decision. It is important to keep your ceremony environment in mind when you are considering this option. If you are getting married in a location where it can tend to be windy, like on the beach or the top of a mountain, a veil, particularly a long one, might not be the best choice. While a blowing veil can be beautiful in photographs, it can be distracting during your ceremony.

If there’s a chance you will encounter a breeze on your wedding day, but still want to wear a veil, opt for a lace or beaded trim veil. The novelty detail will add a little weight to the veil and it won’t be as apt to blow in the breeze.

5. Traveling with Your Wedding Gown

I never recommend shipping your gown or wedding attire. Call ahead to your airline and inquire about the size of the aircraft that you will be traveling on and ask if there is room in first-class or the flight attendant closet for you to store a garment bag.

If you are traveling with a very large wedding gown, vacuum seal it! Turn the gown inside out, place it in a large vacuum seal bag intended for a comforter and remove the air. This will tremendously reduce the size of the gown and will allow you to fit it into a suitcase. When you arrive at the destination, hang the gown immediately. Be sure there is a steamer available for a final pressing on the wedding day.

Wine Country Wedding Destination

Wine Country Wedding Destination

Traveling to a place like Sonoma County brings an abundance of anticipation. The wine, the beauty and the landscape are world renowned. Whether going for your wedding, honeymoon or simply a romantic getaway, Sonoma delivers. With more major airline carriers now flying direct, there are new opportunities and ideas in this richly cultured wine country wedding destination.

One example of this is Cornerstone Sonoma, a Sunset Magazine garden and marketplace with on-site boutique shops, a variety of unique ceremony sites, event spaces and, of course, a winery right next door to make planning a destination wedding simple and stress-free.

As you make your way into the Sonoma Valley, a short drive north of San Francisco, one can see why it’s one of the most visited wine regions in the world. Couples have many options when choosing a space or winery in which to tie the knot. When asked what makes Sonoma Valley so unique, Birgitt Vaughan, Public Relations Manager for Sonoma County Tourism, says, “Sonoma County offers more than 425 wineries, romantic vineyards and breathtaking Pacific Ocean beaches.”

Kunde Family Winery provides a magical setting atop Boot Hill, a place straight out of a dream. You can host an entire event under massive majestic oak trees, which look to have been plucked right out of a painting, with 360-degree views of the valley and vineyard.

Staying at the romantic Kenwood Inn and Spa, A Four Sisters Inn, pulls the stress right out of you. This 29-room boutique hotel is nestled in the valley like your own hideaway. Its lush gardens and fountain areas are perfect for intimate moments with your soon-to-be partner in life.

Food options abound with restaurants like Glen Ellen Star in the small town of Glen Ellen, which serves what could be the best clam chowder on the planet. Healdsburg has a multitude of vibrant boutique restaurants and facilities like Barndiva with its high-end food, adjacent wine barn and wedding facilities. Just off Highway 101, you can feast at one of America’s first farm-to-fork restaurants – John Ash & Co. – parked on property at the amazing Vintners Inn. This hotel is a go-to as it can host grand weddings while providing romantic wine country flare.

Exploring the region is part of the adventure. Within a quick scenic drive, you can be on the coast watching the waves crash at Goat Rock Beach, hiking in Armstrong Redwoods State Natural Reserve observing the local wildlife or contemplating the sheer size of the area’s largest redwood trees. Near Guerneville, you will find one of the most unique and new types of places to stay. AutoCamp features luxury Airstreams and high-end tent camping. Making your way back into the valley you should certainly stay and eat at Farmhouse Inn and Spa. This recently renovated boutique hotel takes country-chic to another level with their on-site master sommelier.

Finding the right place to say “I do” in a destination like Sonoma County, where everything is breathtaking, makes scouting even more exciting as you narrow your choices. St. Francis Vineyards and Winery has a stunning setting and all the facilities for a magnificent event. Nearby Landmark Vineyards, with its Spanish revival architecture, has rich history forged by the John Deere family or maybe Paradise Ridge Winery is the place for you, with views overlooking the Russian River Valley. The options seem to be endless and you are bound to find the place that is meant for you and your special someone.

The people and places in Sonoma County provide couples the feeling of a second home where you can come and celebrate one of the greatest days of your lives. Each place you find has its own unique story of how it got there. It easily makes you think, “Maybe I should move here.” It’s that inviting! Mrs. Vaughan goes on to say, “Sonoma County has award-winning restaurants, majestic redwood forests, relaxing resorts, paired with world-class wine, beer and spirits and abundant sunshine. Last but not least, this wine country favorite is just 45 minutes away from San Francisco.”

No matter what your intentions are in this bountiful region, you are certain to find a place that is romantic, scenic, relaxed and full of wine.

Note: Sonoma County was affected by the devastating California wildfires in the fall of 2017, but the vendors and venues are back in business and better than ever.

Palm Springs Wedding Inspiration

Who said love isn’t a numbers’ game? This Palm Springs wedding inspiration is all about geometry – from the pentagon-shaped ceremony arch to the intricately patterned chairs and centerpieces. This edgy photo shoot concept (no pun intended!) marries desert glam and relaxed sophistication. The trendy, geometric gold details are offset by a classic, natural color palette of green, cream and warm hues. With the Colony Palms Hotel as the backdrop, vintage details combine beautifully with symmetrical shapes and geode-inspired patterns. No matter your chosen wedding destination, there’s brilliance to be found in this “Edgy Inspiration in Palm Springs” photo shoot.

1-2 & 4-5: The Colony Palms Hotel set the scene for design by BrownHot Events, floral designs by Isari Flower Studio + Event Design, table and chairs from Folklore Vintage Rentals and a geometric arch and table accessories by Enticing Tables. Our charming bride is stunning in a Lazaro by JLM Couture gown, hair by Davee Troublefield, makeup by Gabriella Shpirt of the Troublefield Lifestyle and earrings by Maria Elena Headpieces & Accessories. Our groom is ready to say “I do” in a suit from Friar Tux.

3: Our bride’s better half is ready to celebrate in a dinner jacket from Mr. Turk and shirt from Friar Tux.

6-10: These cakes by Hey There, Cupcake! and stationery suite by Prim & Pixie are great examples of this geode and geometric theme. The invitations and paper goods are completed with calligraphy by Calligraphy Nerd. A bouquet by Isari Flower Studio + Event Design is the perfect complement to our bride’s Lazaro gown by JLM Couture, hair by Davee Troublefield and makeup by Gabriella Shpirt of the Troublefield Lifestyle.
