An Ireland Destination Wedding

Newlyweds Sydney and Christopher chose an Ireland destination wedding because wanted to stray from tradition and have a more unique and memorable experience. “We sat down and discussed if a more ‘traditional’ wedding was even right for us,” says the couple. “The immediate answer was a hard ‘no.’”

When the pair first told their family and friends about their decision, many thought the bride and groom were joking. “Upon learning that we were both quite serious, most people were surprised, but quite excited,” they say.

Before Sydney and Christopher were able to announce where they were going to tie the knot, they admit choosing a destination was the hardest part of the process. “To start, we wanted somewhere beautiful,” they say. “We also did not want anything tropical or too far of a distance, due to several family members having health issues.”

In the end, the couple chose Ireland because it is somewhere they have both always wanted to visit. Planning ahead was essential for them, especially to get all of the paperwork and legalities sorted.

“We both loved planning a destination wedding because it forced us to let go of control and not focus on the tiny details that will never really matter twenty years from now,” says the newlyweds. “It was like a year and a half long adventure!”

As for resources, the bride and groom say the internet was a hug help for planning their travels and searching for vendors. “Also, do not be afraid to talk to your venue or other vendors for ideas and help,” they say. “Irish weddings are different enough from American ones that we weren’t sure what order things happened in or what other customs would be nice to include in our big day. They’re the experts for a reason, so trust them.”

Because planning for a trip can be slightly difficult, Sydney and Christopher decided to create a website with guides and recommendations for booking airlines, finding lodging, discovering activities and even explaining how the currency works. “Syd even went and explored the country twice prior to the wedding, so she was a great source of help,” says the groom.

Although the time difference and busy schedules made it tricky to coordinate with vendors at times, the newlyweds say all vendors were very patient and communicated with them often. “We mostly used email, but also arranged a couple of phone calls and Skype meetings so we could meet face-to-face,” they say.

Despite the travels, the pair says that they “definitely spent significantly less” for their big day. “A lot of that came from dropping our guest list from 160 down to having 50 people total,” says the bride and groom. “It was a great decision in the end because we had more of a budget to put toward making it a truly special day for our guests who traveled great lengths to be with us.”

While Sydney and Christopher ended up with a smaller guest list, they believe that having a destination wedding allowed them to have a more intimate experience with each other and loved ones.

In the end, the couple advises to have trust in yourself and others, keeping in mind that the vendors are experts with good intentions. “Things will definitely go wrong,” says the pair. “That being said, no matter what happens, at the end of the day you get to marry your best friend. That is the only detail that truly matters. The rest is just an added bonus!”

Central Coast California Weddings

The Central Coast of California, The Perfect Blend of Wine and Fun

If you picture yourselves exchanging vows under a beautiful flower arbor in wine country, then consider the Central Coast of California. Rolling hills lined with row after row of grapevines, blue skies and magnificent views of the Pacific Ocean take you in as you venture along Highway 1. The sights, smells and tastes you discover along the way are quite intoxicating (be careful – there are over 300 wineries!) as are the diverse settings for a truly unique destination wedding.

Cradled within 20 acres of orchards, gardens and vineyards in Paso Robles is Allegretto Vineyard Resort, a Mediterranean-inspired resort with every amenity you can imagine for you and your guests. A luxury spa, farm-to-table cuisine, private label wine tasting, well-appointed guest suites and central location provide a good start, and then add in some unique venue settings. A favorite for us was their French-inspired Abbey de Lerines for an intimate ceremony or seated rehearsal dinner. Larger celebrations are also possible in the Veneto Ballroom or numerous outdoor courtyard or garden settings.

William Randolf Hearst once said, “I would rather spend a month here than any place in the world.” He was referring to the amazing Hearst Castle, that he dreamed of and then constructed in San Simeon, on the California coast. He entertained the rich and famous in the 1920s era and it is still where you can entertain your family and friends for an over-the-top wedding.

If your style is a bit more understated, the SummerWood Winery and Inn offers some amazing wines (we didn’t taste one we didn’t like) and a picturesque setting for a beautiful wedding ceremony and reception. We made another totally unique discovery at the Sextant Winery, which includes the authentic historic town of Edna, complete with a restored blacksmith shop, now converted into a quaint location for a wedding party reception or rehearsal dinner. Your photographer’s creative juices will go into high gear in this fun setting.

Here’s our recipe for a perfect day: start with a morning stroll on the beach, then on to a bit of wine tasting, followed by pampering at the spa at Sycamore Mineral Springs in Avila Beach and top it off with a tasty dinner at a seaside restaurant. The Central Coast of California has the perfect blend of wine and fun.

A Dominican Republic Wedding

Russell and Sarah’s love for the Dominican Republic’s natural beauty and island lifestyle made it a perfect location for their seaside destination wedding.

While the couple admits flying to the small island was a concern for many guests, the promise of tropical drinks and a fun celebration made the journey well worth it. “It was a once in a lifetime experience to enjoy a group trip with a happy ending,” says the pair.

Although the couple is in the wedding industry at home, they underestimated how different it would be to plan the wedding abroad. Russell and Sarah say most of the vendors they used “did not have websites, wouldn't return emails or calls, and had no way of really communicating what they had to offer, let alone have any type of pricing.”

The answer to this issue? According to the newlyweds, it was all resolved with a local wedding planner. “In the end, we found it was best to hire a local person who knew the island vendors and was able to coordinate everything for us,” they say. “This is key when doing a destination wedding like we did, otherwise it would not have gone as well.”

Without the planner, the bride and groom admit it would have been a lot more difficult to communicate. They often used WhatsApp to message and video chat with vendors.

“With a destination wedding, there are some cons that are different,” says the couple. “Like not being able to get the finer details you might have imagined for your wedding or being hands-on in the selection process of chairs and tables or even the exact flower arrangements, since most of these things are done via email or text conversations.”

However, the pair says visiting the location before the big day helped them feel more comfortable with the area and allowed them to coordinate details with their planner. “Sometimes, pictures and videos of the location don’t do it justice. You may not understand the layout fully or there could be issues with your plans that you can not see unless you are standing there,” says the couple.

Aside from vendors, Russell and Sarah say because their wedding was held in a non-touristy part of the island, travel logistics were slightly trickier to coordinate with guests. Visiting the location in person again helped them get a better idea of what to expect. “We were able to give our friends and family a good idea of the pricing, airports available, along with personal notes and suggestions based on our personal travels to the location,” says the newlyweds.

After all of the planning, Russell and Sarah ended up exchanging their vows just as they had envisioned — and at a good price. “Though the price was about the same as we would have spent here in the States, we did get a whole week with family and friends,” says the couple. “So in our opinion, it was worth way more to do a destination wedding.”

While the price may have been similar for a wedding at home, the pair agrees the memories would not have been. “On the island, we were able to enjoy a weeks worth of peaceful bliss,” they say. “If it had been here in the States, we would have focused more on the glam and the ‘wow,’ since it would have been a one day event.”

How to Choose a Wedding Officiant

Choosing an officiant for your destination wedding is a highly personal, important part of the planning process. Not only will your officiant make your commitment to each other legally binding, but they will set the overall tone for your ceremony. There are few things worse than attending a wedding in which the officiant clearly doesn’t know the couple and stumbles their way through an impersonal and generic ceremony. What’s the safest way to ensure a sentimental and highly personalized ceremony? Choosing your officiant from amongst friends and family. Online ordination has been a growing trend over the years. In fact, it has become common enough that there is a non-profit dedicated to creating professional and proficient officiants online – American Marriage Ministries (AMM).

This Seattle-based non-profit ordains ministers online and guides their officiants through the process of creating and delivering a professional ceremony. They also advocate for their ministers across the country to marry all types of couples – ensuring that everyone can marry who they want in a way that reflects their own values and beliefs.

American Marriage Ministries believes that choosing your officiant is as important as selecting your bridal party. Asking someone to be a bridesmaid or groomsmen can be quite an elaborate process, so AMM thought choosing an officiant should be just as celebratory. That’s why they created the “Will Your Marry Us?” gift package. It’s meant to be an unexpected and touching way to ask a friend or family to get ordained in order to marry you and your spouse. Here’s how the process works from start-to-finish in three easy steps:

1. The couple goes to theamm.org/will-you-marry-us and purchases their “Will You Marry Us” Gift Package, which is shipped to them. Then they give it to their officiant (AMM can also send it directly to the officiant if that’s easier).

2. The officiant gets ordained online through theamm.org and enters his or her unique code that is included in the package. AMM sends the officiant their ordination documents, along with all required legal forms and instructions.

3. The officiant and couple can then use the tools and instructions included in the “Will You Marry Us” gift package to prepare and deliver a memorable and legal wedding ceremony anywhere in the USA.

“Officiating weddings requires preparation and practice, and asking someone to perform your ceremony shouldn’t be done lightly. That’s why you choose someone who you know, trust, and love to officiate. Our 'Will You Marry Us' Gift Package is a chance to express this appreciation,” says Natasha Anakotta, AMM Director of Marketing & Support Services. The 'Will You Marry Us?' gift package is priced at $95 and includes the following:

• 1 Copy of our AMM Minister’s Manual

• 1 Ordination Certificate

• 1 Letter of Good Standing

• 1 Certificate Holder

• Minister Licensing Instructions (where applicable)

• Minister Licensing Application Materials (where applicable)

Wedding Ceremony Materials

• 1 Embroidered AMM Satin Wedding Officiant Stole

• 1 "Will You Marry Us?" greeting card + navy envelope

• 1 Copy of Asked to Officiate, Ceremony Writing and Delivery Guide

• 1 Screen Printed Canvas AMM Minister’s Tote Bag

• 1 Embossed AMM Minister’s Pin, Struck from Jeweler's Metal

• 2 AMM Embossed Gold Embossed Presidential™ Custom Pen

Choosing to have a destination wedding means you’re willing to think outside the box and go above and beyond to treat your most treasured loved ones. Continue the trend and create a one-of-a-kind ceremony by having a loved one officiate. For more information or to speak with someone at American Marriage Ministries, please call 206-395-9164 or visit theamm.org.

Southern Wedding at Stella Plantation
Mon, 18 Feb 2019 09:00:00 GMT

Myra and Hao said “I do” in front of friends and family during a Southern wedding at Stella Plantation. Her family heritage is Indian and his Chinese, so their reception consisted of a blend of both cultures. The bride simply dazzled in an empire waist, fit and flare gown with a sweetheart neckline and beaded bodice. Her groom went with a bright navy-blue suit accompanied by a blue and gray striped bow tie and suede shoes. From their naked cake to the table seating and menu cards, this couple’s nuptials from start to end oozed style and a perfect combination of the best trends happening  in the wedding world right now.

The couple creates yummy concoctions each day and displays their mouth watering treats vis social media. So, naturally these foodies would choose New Orleans, the food capital of the South, as their wedding destination. Their wedding day was a combination of incredible food, surprise choreographed dances, heartfelt speeches and sweet Southern style!

According to the couple, the two most memorable moments from the wedding day would be:

1. "Seeing all of our favorite family and friends all in one place at our welcome dinner was such a happy feeling. Hao and I kept saying to each other, 'This is so much fun!' and 'we don't want this to end!' and then, 'can we do this over again?' We are so lucky our friends and family traveled from near and far to join us."

2. "Probably the second song into the reception, just being totally out of breath having such a blast dancing with everyone. The DJ killed it."

To them, the best part of the planning experience were, "Tastings. Food tasting, cake tasting, wine tasting, any tasting you can get - and of course, having a very legitimate excuse to explore New Orleans."

An Intimate Maui Wedding
Fri, 15 Feb 2019 09:00:00 GMT

Katarina and Elijah decided to have a destination wedding after their local venues didn’t meet their expectations and left them disappointed. The couple wanted to do something different and personal. When local venues could not accommodate their wishes, they turned to Maui, Hawaii.

Katarina and Elijah’s families were concerned that extended family members would not be able to attend. The guests were invited with “a very advanced notice” and understood if family members could not make it.

The couple chose Maui because that is where Elijah proposed to Katarina during their fourth year of dating. The couple heavily relied on the venue and the vendors in Maui because they did not visit the venue before booking.

The newlyweds say their destination wedding planning was overall a good experience. They decided to keep their ideas simple and having the venue elsewhere allowed them to relax during the planning stages.

“In a way, it was a relief to have things not as accessible so there would be less to worry about,” the pair says.

The couple did their own research on vendors and relied on references from their friends. They also used Merriman Maui’s vendor recommendation list to narrow down the options.

The bride limited her DIY projects due to travel, but did design her own wedding invitations and thank you cards. For table numbers, the couple had acrylic blocks and hired Jolene Xie, a local calligrapher, to write the numbers.

Katarina and Elijah’s guests didn’t face many travel-related issues. The couple made sure to give a lot of notice via save the dates and early invitations. Most of their guests flew from San Francisco, California, and Seattle, Washington without a problem.

The pair coordinated with their vendors primarily by email. Their venue provided event coordination and was able to assist if questions came up.

The couple thinks they spent the same amount of money, as they would have a local wedding. The couple could have saved money by having their reception during the day, but wanted to go the extra mile for their guest and have it during the evening to show their appreciation.

If the pair had a local wedding, they would have invited more people. The couple says if they had invited more people to their wedding, it would have changed the overall experience for them and their guests. Having a destination wedding, they were able to keep their wedding intimate and relaxed.

The newlyweds advise people who are planning their big day to remember that it’s your wedding and to not let peoples’ opinions weigh too heavily on what you want.

“No matter how well prepared you are, something will go wrong or not be how you envisioned,” the couple says. “Let the small things go and enjoy the moments. The day goes by fast!”
