A Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica Wedding

Megan and Jake enjoy adventure, nature and making memories through the experiences they share together. That’s why their decision to have a destination wedding in Costa Rica was nothing less than fitting.

“Our friends and family were very excited with our decision,” says the bride. “Many of them arrived before our wedding or stayed after our wedding to make an extended vacation out of it.”

When the couple came across Villa Punto de Vista after researching venues online, they knew there was no other place they’d want to have their wedding. “We wanted something that would be completely unforgettable for ourselves, along with all our guests; something that was unique and a “once in a lifetime” experience [and that] is exactly what we found in Villa Punto de Vista,” says Megan.

With the help of a wedding planner that was experienced and familiar with the area and local vendors, the couple was able to pull off a stunning and seamless wedding of their dreams. “My Wedding Planner was my ‘one stop shop’ for vendor referrals, planning tools and everything else that I needed.  She even went to the Villa to video the venue location for me,” says the bride. “I didn’t travel to Costa Rica prior to our wedding, so I didn’t test any of the food or the cake or see any mock-ups of flowers but that really didn’t bother me – I had complete confidence in Susan and she delivered!”

Before the wedding, Megan’s soon to be Mother in Law made personalized napkin rings that were handed out at the welcome reception. Other items that were customized were found on Etsy and shipped to Susan, the couple’s wedding planner.

The couple enjoyed their destination wedding alongside 50 of their closest friends and family. “If we didn’t choose to do a destination wedding, we know we would’ve had a lot more guests, a shorter amount of time for all of us to celebrate together and the overall experience wouldn’t have been as unique,” says the bride. “In total, we spent about the same amount of money that we would have spent in the U.S., at a comparable venue.  However, that would’ve been a six-hour affair in the U.S.  In Costa Rica, we had a four-day celebration.”

Our bride’s advice to other couple’s planning their destination wedding is to “never forget that the most important thing is who you say “I do” to. It can be easy to get caught up in all the planning and put the needs of yourself and your significant other on the back burner while you try to keep everyone else content.”

A St. John Destination Wedding

A St. John Destination Wedding

Sal and Irene were drawn to a destination wedding in St. John in the U.S. Virgin Islands for two reasons – it was where they got engaged and they loved the idea of getting their loved ones out of a frigid winter and into Caribbean temperatures. “We both have large families and when it came time to plan the wedding, we were excited about the idea of gathering a more intimate group of our closest family and friends for a few days versus a few hours,” says Irene. The couple’s intuition was correct and 75 excited and eager guests joined them in St. John.

Unfortunately, a high tide interfered with the couple’s plans to say “I do” on the sand, but looking back, Irene wouldn’t have had their ceremony any other way. “Not to toot our own horns, but man, it was magical,” says the bride. “Our families walked out to steel drums – setting the perfect island vibe, but allowing us to feel close to home by playing some of our favorite songs. As I walked down the aisle, I did my absolute best to take it all in. Our gorgeously decorated driftwood arch with my soon-to-be husband awaiting me at the end of the aisle had me eager to get to him, but I was also overwhelmed with the picture-perfect setting that surrounded us.”

While the wedding itself was a dream, the couple says the planning process wasn’t a piece of cake. “[It wasn’t easy] to be completely honest,” says Irene. “However, I don’t think many couples would say planning any type of wedding is easy and the extra time and energy we spent in planning a destination wedding was one thousand percent worth it in the end.”

“While it was challenging, we had an incredible team of planners who streamlined the process. Their support was perfection as they truly made our wedding vision come to life while accommodating all our guests comfortably.”

When asked what wisdom she would share with other couples, Irene had loads of helpful advice. “Drink lots of wine while planning. Kidding, but seriously – have fun whenever possible. [On the wedding day] admire the details you worked so hard to create and then get right back on the dance floor! Your guests will feed off the energy you create.”

A Guanacaste, Costa Rica Wedding

Ashley and Zach are huge travelers, which made a Costa Rica destination wedding a no-brainer. Inspired by a fabulous trip they had taken before, the couple decided that Lola’s at Playa Avellanas was the perfect location for their big day. “Zach’s family is from Wisconsin, Ashley’s from Canada and a lot of our friends are all over. Based on this, a lot of people were going to have to travel no matter where we did it, so why not get everyone to go on vacation to celebrate?” say the newlyweds.

Before the day of the wedding, the couple planned some fun activities with their friends and family to give them the best Costa Rican experience and spend as much time as possible with everyone. They adventured on a catamaran tour and hosted a rehearsal dinner in a penthouse apartment with a make-your-own taco bar. The groom’s gift to the groomsmen was to take them on a trip the day before the wedding for snorkeling, riding ATVs and zip-lining.

The sunset ceremony was held on the sand in front of Lola’s and was simple, heartfelt and breathtaking. “It’s a hidden gem and local surf spot that you would have to know about in order to get there,” says the couple. Local cuisine, an open bar, s’mores and a sundae bar all culminated in a major dance party.

“Since the venue and natural beauty were already there, we didn’t feel like we needed to over decorate. We kept things simple with flowers and dip-dyed napkins the bride had made,” says the couple. For the reception, market lights strung across the bamboo dance floor and a huge bonfire lit up the beach.

Not having local knowledge of the area, the couple relied on the Internet to find the best vendors for their W-day. Ashley found their videographer first and loved his work so much that she found her hair and makeup artist through him.

The big day was full of memorable moments, but the first look was the groom’s favorite. There wasn’t a dry eye during the speech from the father of the bride and it was a special moment that Ashley will hold dear to her forever.

Charming Florida Beach Towns

Charming Florida Beach Towns

A Florida native or insider knows the intricacies of the state’s seemingly countless beach towns. But, for outsiders, navigating the Sunshine State’s sandy options can feel overwhelming. It’s tempting to opt for a well-known big hitter like Daytona Beach or Miami, but you would be cutting yourself and your destination wedding guests short by not exploring some of the more off-the-beaten-path options. Enter South Walton County.

South Walton is comprised of a 26-mile stretch of sandy beach in Northwest Florida. More specifically, South Walton includes 16 beach “neighborhoods” from which to choose for your charming destination wedding or honeymoon. As an added bonus, St. Joe Club & Resorts has taken root throughout South Walton and brings to the table a collection of high-end hotels and vacation rentals. This area of Florida is famous for its state parks, coastal forests and rare coastal dune lakes. Read on to discover our top picks from this piece of Floridian paradise.

Rosemary Beach:
This beach town epitomizes the “new urbanist” aesthetic that characterizes South Walton. Buildings boasting Dutch Colonial architecture surround a central square, creating an intimate, pedestrian-friendly hub of activity.

Stay
The Pearl Hotel: A St. Joe Club and Resorts boutique property with just 55 rooms, The Pearl Hotel is at the epicenter of action in Rosemary Beach. The hotel’s restaurant, Havana Beach Bar and Grill, is one of the area’s only AAA Four-Diamond restaurants.

“I Do”
Weddings at The Pearl Hotel are stylish, intimate affairs. Our favorite venue was the Havana Beach Rooftop Lounge. Its rooftop, poolside location is ideal for smaller, trendy weddings with ocean views.

Alys Beach:
Adjacent to Rosemary Beach is the sparkling gem of South Walton – Alys Beach. While each town has its own architectural style, Alys Beach is by far the most recognizable. It’s the Bermudan-inspired architecture with stunning white stucco that sets this chic town apart.

Stay
Alys Beach is comprised of privately owned homes available for rent. Each of the high-end abodes features a private courtyard and water feature. To host your wedding here, you must rent a home with a minimum of three bedrooms for a minimum of four nights.

“I Do”
This high-end enclave is ideal for discerning, modern couples. The well-vetted resources are strictly enforced with mandatory vendors for florals, rentals and catering. Weddings can be hosted on the semi-private beach or in one of the many green spaces.

Seaside:
Visiting this South Walton beach town will feel like stepping back in time. It was the original community built around the “modern urbanist” concept. Seaside features homes with white picket fences, wide front porches and metal roofs – most of which are available for rent. The town’s claim to fame is that it was the setting of the movie “The Truman Show.” David Demarest, Director of Communications for Visit South Walton, describes Seaside as “a little slice of 1950s Americana.”

Play
Seaside’s town center features great shopping, Airstream Row for local food trucks and several beach access points. This is one pit stop along the famous Highway 30A you’ll definitely want to take.

Santa Rosa Beach/WaterColor:
Santa Rosa Beach was founded in 1910 and has a longstanding tradition of excellence in the area. Located in the heart of it all is WaterColor, which boasts stunning parks, breathtaking rental homes and walkways for strolling.

Stay
WaterColor Inn: St. Joe Club and Resorts’ WaterColor Inn has a reputation of distinction. The chic, coastal style and sumptuous rooms would play amazing host for your destination wedding or honeymoon. It’s also home to Fish Out Of Water, the second AAA Four-Diamond restaurant in the area.

“I Do”
Eden Gardens State Park is an affordable, breathtaking setting for weddings. You can exchange vows beneath the “wedding tree” – a 600-year-old Spanish moss-draped Oak – and in front of the historic 1895 mansion. Back at WaterColor Inn, there are a plethora of green parks and sophisticated spaces for your nuptials. Our favorite combination would be a ceremony in Cerulaan Park and reception at the WaterColor LakeHouse.

Play
Hop on a complimentary bike courtesy of WaterColor Inn and pedal to see the coastal dune lakes up close in Point Washington State Forest. The area’s many bridges and waterways provide a scenic backdrop. You can also swing by WaterColor Inn’s BoatHouse for stand up paddleboarding, kayaking or fishing.

A Kauai Mountaintop Elopement

Kayla and Josh immediately fell in love with the idea of hiking to their elopement. When Kayla stumbled upon one of Meg Brandyhouse’s photos while searching “Kauai” through Instagram, she knew she wanted her elopement to take place on a stunning Kauai mountaintop. Kayla says she and her husband were never big on traditional weddings because it just didn’t seem like them. They didn’t want the stress of making everyone else happy and putting tons of money into one day. The couple feels that the day is supposed to be about the two of them having the perfect day together that they would never forget.

Kayla’s family was supportive of their decision to elope. “They were definitely bummed that they wouldn’t be able to spend the day with us, but we’ve always been very close so they understood our decision,” the bride says. Josh’s family was disappointed the couple didn’t decide on a traditional wedding because his family wanted to share their day with him as well. The pair says it helped that they were upfront about it and told their families what they wanted. “Since we were so excited about it, they were good about being respectful since they did want to support us too,” Josh says.

The newlyweds decided where they wanted to honeymoon before they decided on the location of the wedding. The hiking elopement idea fit right into their Kauai honeymoon plans. Kayla and Josh knew they wanted to say their vows at the Kalalau Lookout, but that was the only set plan they had. Their goal was to make an adventure of the day and “just have fun.” The couple placed all their trust in the Meg Bradyhouse Photography team and tried a new spot on the mountain. Kayla says they didn’t run into any issues. “Both of us came into the day with a general idea of what we wanted, but nothing specific,” she says. “I think when that approach is used, it’s almost hard to have any issues as long as we were together.”

The newlyweds wanted a simple wedding and wanted to keep the day about them. Josh says there wasn’t a lot to plan besides looking up general information on Hawaii’s marriage requirements. “We never once felt overwhelmed or stressed with the whole thing,” he says.

The bride and groom say to do what makes you happy on your big day, it’s about the wants of the couple getting married and don’t try to plan every detail. “Have fun and don’t be afraid to think outside the box,” they say.

Even if you’re just shaking down your local party supply store for their best stuff, it’s always important to plan for your DIY decor. Because even pom-poms need to be transported and set up. Here is what you should be thinking about.
