A Luxury Upstate Private Camp

Deep in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains overlooking the shimmering waters of Saranac Lake, paradise awaits at The Point Resort. This all-inclusive Gilded Age getaway is where one comes to celebrate some of life’s grandest moments, like your wedding or honeymoon. With only 11 rooms, both in several cushy log cabins and in the main house, this former William Avery Rockefeller “Great Camp” offers an intimate escape into nature. Here, you and your beloved can reserve the entire property to hold a deeply personal ceremony with friends and family or celebrate your union in a luxurious locale drenched in balsam-rich air.

The first Relais & Châteaux property in North America and the only Forbes Five-Star property in Upstate New York, The Point Resort is the sort of place where chilled Champagne awaits at every turn, guest don black tie for multi-course weekend dinners and evenings conclude with port and homemade s’mores around a crackling fire.

Warmer months center around The Boathouse, which has a stylish, nautically decorated private suite, complete with a wraparound deck offering breathtaking sunsets over Saranac Lake. After a leisurely gourmet breakfast, paddle a canoe, kayak or rowboat to a nearby island, or steer one of the resort’s romantic, mahogany, electric inboards for two, around the lake with a luncheon picnic and fine wine. Come sundown, step aboard the antique green and red painted Elco launch for a spin around the lake, complete with cocktails and hot hors d’oeuvres. Or, savor drinks and dinner at any of The Point’s private oasis – a cabin in the woods, alfresco overlooking the lake or in the privacy of your room.

The Great Hall, with its massive fireplaces, mounted elk heads and cozy, wooden cupola ceiling, is also where couples or a wedding party can gather for meals. Executive Chef, Loic Leperlier, a veteran of the Michelin star restaurant Lucas Carton in Paris, turns local and specialty ingredients into sumptuous, seasonal fare, all paired with exquisite wines. Cap off the night with coffee, cognac or a stroll under the stars, where the galaxy unfolds before you in a way that feels as infinite as your love for one another.

Helpful Tip: The easiest way to travel to The Point from major East Coast cities is to fly Cape Air, the only commercial airline that flies to Adirondack Regional Airport in Saranac Lake, New York. Staff from The Point will then greet you and drive you to the property.

Savoring the Taste of Memories in Northern India

Spotlight: Upstate New York

There is a Native American legend that the Great Spirit laid his hand upon the land to bless it and when the hand lifted, the imprints left behind formed the impressions of the five Finger Lakes. The region certainly is blessed with unspoiled beauty, warm hospitality, lively farm-to-table restaurants, outdoor activities galore and wineries, breweries and distilleries around every corner…all in America’s backyard.

Rochester, New York is the “front door” of the Finger Lakes region and is where we started our journey.  History seemed to surround us as we drove down streets lined with century old trees and magnificent Victorian mansions. Our first stop was the Strathallan Rochester, where we found a tale of two centuries.  The City View Ballroom is modern and elegant, with a very sophisticated vibe and 360-degree views of the city. Just across the street is the Century Club, built in 1892, with a more intimate feel.

Just down the street is the beautiful estate of George Eastman, the founder of the Eastman Kodak Company. Built between 1902 and 1905, this historic mansion provides a perfect backdrop for wedding ceremonies with its stunning staircase, light and airy conservatory and manicured gardens. It is no surprise it is also a favorite place for wedding photographers to capture a “first look.”

One of the more noted wedding venues in the region is Belhurst Castle and Winery, which was voted number three in USA TODAY’S 10 Best Wine Country Hotels in 2018. Located on the shores of beautiful Seneca Lake, the large lawn is a favorite ceremony location, followed by a castle reception fit for a prince or princess. With three hotels, two restaurants, a winery, spa and salon, you can create the wedding of your dreams all in one place.

Located in the charming village of Aurora on the eastern shore of Cayuga Lake is the Aurora Inn. During the summer months, weddings are held on an expansive stone terrace overlooking the lake. Steeped in history, nineteenth century elegance coupled with modern convenience make the Aurora Inn an inviting location for hosting your wedding events and accommodating your guests.

In contrast, after a little tire crunching outside of Ithaca, New York, we came upon some hidden gems. At Gratitude and Grace, we fell in love with the contrast of a stunning country barn with an elegant Italian chandelier, twinkle lights and tulle. This is a wedding venue where you and your guests can enjoy the property for the weekend and the celebration can go on for as long as you like. There is also a beautiful Victorian house on property where you and 14 of your family and friends can stay.

Another amazing country venue in the Ithaca area is the Treman Center. It features a three-story event space created from local stone and wood salvaged from an 1870s hay barn, a serene Tuscan courtyard with circular firepit and a beautiful outdoor tent sourced from Africa.

“Whimsical” best describes New Park Retreat, a bed and breakfast and event center on beautiful grounds just outside of Ithaca. This is a wedding venue where creativity is encouraged and the staff takes pride in making your vision come true. Whether it is a circus themed wedding or dining in the forest, New Park Retreat can make it happen.

There are over 100 wineries in the Finger Lakes region and Heron Hill Winery in Hammondsport has undoubtedly one of the most spectacular views of Keuka Lake. A beautiful, landscaped lawn overlooking the lake is the setting for warm weather ceremonies, followed by a tent reception featuring some of their premier wines carefully chosen to accompany the wedding menu. For a comfy place to lay your head and enjoy an outstanding meal in Hammondsport, check out the Pleasant Valley Inn.

Our last stop was Letchworth State Park, often known as the “Grand Canyon of the East” with three major waterfalls, lush forests and dramatic cliffs. Couples can reserve any number of overlooks for no cost on a first-come-first-served basis for ceremonies. Glen Iris Inn, which was formerly a country estate, is also a popular site for ceremonies and receptions in the park. The wedding site for the Inn overlooks Middle Falls, an amazing backdrop.

At Destination I Do, we are always in search of up and coming destination wedding locations. The Finger Lakes region of New York provided us with one surprise after another, where the value was amazing without sacrificing quality.

What Not To Wear To A Wedding

As a wedding guest, there are a few big no-no's when it comes to what to wear. From anything white to flips flops and board shorts, here's what NOT to wear to a wedding.

Comforting Your Wedding Party

Your wedding party will most likely be overjoyed to be a part of your destination wedding day and get to take a little vacay. However, they are "out of their element" -- as they say -- and it is important to make sure they feel comfortable! The folks at Be Inspired PR rounded up advice on the subject from wedding industry experts. This was what they had to say:

Grace Lee, Founder & CEO of Birdy Grey

Being a bridesmaid is a huge honor, but keep in mind that not everyone may be on the same budget. Between the bridal shower, bachelorette party, gifts and wedding travel, expenses quickly add up. One way to make everyone in the bridal party feel comfortable is to opt for bridesmaid dresses that won't break the bank. All of Birdy Grey's bridesmaid dresses are under $100 and come in a range of figure-flatting silhouettes and styles, so there's something for everyone.

With the average cost of a bridesmaid dress at $165 (before alterations) and considering the fact that most women will only wear the dress once, Birdy Grey's affordable gowns are a no-brainer. If it's within your budget, you can also help offset the cost with our $50 Halfsies E-Gift Card, which makes a great addition to your "bridesmaid proposal" box, and will make your bridesmaids on a budget feel more comfortable to partake upfront.

Choose a bachelorette party destination that is accessible to everyone, such as a staycation at a charming Airbnb or local boutique hotel--the girls on a budget can opt-out of staying overnight to help save on costs. Ask a family member or relative to co-host your bridal shower, so that your bridesmaids won't have to foot the entire bill.

If not everyone in your bridal knows each other (such as a childhood bestie or close co-worker), plan smaller outings in more intimate settings (venue hunting or wedding dress shopping) so that they get to know each other before larger events, like the bachelorette party or bridal shower.

“We all know buddies come in different sizes. Big and tall. Goofy and lanky and of course, we all love our buddies as they are. At Generation Tux, we like to say, “Everyone is invited”. It is why we created our collection to be comfortable and stylish. Flex-fit waistbands, 100% wool that is breathable and light and 100% cotton shirts. We don’t use polyester blends or cheap fabrics that can add longevity to items. We go for comfort and style. To do that, you have to invest in your product. So to make sure that everyone is comfortable in your wedding party, make sure to choose a quality product. Read reviews. Do home try-ons. Get a feel for what they will feel.

Nathan Bellah, VP of Marketing at Generation Tux

Break the ice. Oftentimes your bridal party will consist of important people from all the different phases of your life—so it’s very likely not everyone will know each other! After asking your friends and fam to join your bride tribe, get them all together for a casual meet-and-greet so they’ll be comfortable within the group prior to the start of the wedding festivities. Or if they live in different parts of the world, you can even do this virtually via a Skype happy hour!

Jenna Miller, Creative Director, Here Comes the Guide

Choose flattering dresses—or let them pick their own. Along with being considerate of the price point of your bridesmaid dresses, you'll also want to consider the shapes and sizes of your bridal party. One size doesn’t fit all—so keep each member in mind before choosing that form-fitting strapless gown! One way around this is to give them fashion freedom. Take advantage of the mix-and-match dress trend by giving your ladies the color palette/event style you've chosen, along with the freedom to pick their own ensemble. Your bridal party will appreciate your flexibility—and they'll feel better about spending money on an outfit they'll likely wear again!

Let them choose their own hair and/or makeup. Each of your bridal party members is beautiful and unique in their own way—so why you want them all wearing the same shade of red lipstick or the same stiff updo? They'll feel the most comfortable if you let them choose their own makeup and hairstyle, whether they do it themselves or get professionally done-up. Just remember: If you insist that your bridesmaids get their hair or makeup professionally done, you’re required to pick up the tab!

Let them choose their own shoes. This is another place where one size doesn’t fit all! If you want your bridesmaids to be comfortable all wedding long, let them pick their own footwear. You can always give them a specific color to stick to for uniformity and coordination purposes, but don't require a 4-inch stiletto or piggy-pinching style. And if you want them to be really comfy, gift them with a cute pair of flip-flops for dancing at the reception!

Feel the Welcome of Belize

Anchored firmly in the Caribbean Sea lies Ambergris Caye, the largest island off the coast of Belize. This long, narrow island is one of the more developed cayes, offering sophisticated options for wedding parties.

You’ll feel the welcome of Mahogany Bay Resort and Beach Club as you drive down the long dirt path to the Great House. Its luxurious, plantation style has a warmth to match the welcome. The Guest House is the heartbeat of the property, where guests can gather and socialize. The upper levels have expansive decks with million-dollar views; the perfect stage for unforgettable “I do’s.”

The Mahogany Bay Resort boasts some of the most varied accommodations on the island, with the ability to accommodate couples and large groups alike. Rentals include a cottage for two or villas for parties of 10 or more with a private pool and boat dock. They paid particular attention to using local hardwoods in each room, which all include outdoor seating spaces. This convergence of the indoors and out sets a stage for relaxation that the Caribbean is known for. The property is vast, the views abundant and privacy tangible. It is arranged as its own private community with spa amenities, a freestanding coffee shop and a vendor’s row offering local flavors and snacks, all complementing the full service dining options on property. For a destination wedding, this makes the Mahogany Bay Resort your singular Belizean island choice.

The beauty of Ambergris Caye is not Mahogany Bay Resorts’ alone. The Belize Barrier Reef, the largest in the Western Hemisphere, is one of the biggest draws to the island. For guests who wish to keep their feet aground, the property has its own private beach club.

Don’t forget:

  • Golf carts are the main mode of island transportation, so you’ll want one for you and your guests to move around the property, as well as for excursions throughout the caye.
  • Spa day! The full service spa includes not just wellness and relaxation, but also hair and nail services to get you and your wedding party ready.
  • Flights to Ambergris Caye leave every 30 minutes to and from Belize City, making this island an easy destination for travelers.
  • Charter a boat for a day-diving trip to Shark Ray Alley or the infamous Great Blue Hole.

Wine Country with a Twist

Explore Canadian Wine Country

Honeymooning or getting hitched in wine country often brings to mind California’s Napa or Sonoma valleys. While both are gorgeous spots with plenty to offer, a hipper, edgier destination with standout wineries, a locavore food scene, luxurious resorts and tons of outdoor activities is British Columbia’s Okanagan Valley.

Stretching 124 miles north from the border of Washington state, the Okanagan Valley has nearly 200 wineries, multiple lakes and the dynamic city of Kelowna perched on the sandy shores of Okanagan Lake, perfect for swimming, paddling, boating, water-skiing, and windsurfing. Parks and woodland trails around the valley provide picturesque hiking and a youthful population adds a creative buzz and lively vibe.

Depending upon your travel style, you can rent a car at the Kelowna International Airport to explore the area’s five wine regions, handily mapped out in Kelowna’s Wine Trails guide. Alternatively, numerous outfitters provide guided winery tours, such as Kelowna Concierge, whose private or day tours can include VIP access or an added focus on area breweries, distilleries, cideries or food.

In terms of where to stay, Sparkling Hill Resort, perched on a granite bluff overlooking Okanagan Lake, offers sybaritic splendor, particularly in one of the swanky penthouse suites. Gernot Langes-Swarovski envisioned this retreat, complete with 3.5 million dazzling Swarovski crystals sprinkled throughout the property. The sprawling spa features multiple steam rooms (including one scented with roses), saunas, pools and body treatments and Peak Fine Restaurant offers luscious, garden-fresh dinners.

For lavish downtown digs, Delta Hotels by Marriott Grand Okanagan Resort reigns supreme. Overlooking Okanagan Lake, the property has waterfront suites, an indulgent spa and Oak + Cru Social Kitchen & Wine Bar featuring inventive, farm-centric dishes.

For a smaller, boutique-style hotel, consider Hotel Eldorado. Built in 1926 on Okanagan Lake, the property has a warm, family feel and a porch-like waterfront restaurant serving seasonal bounty from area vineyards and farms.

British Columbia’s wine industry, most of which comes from the Okanagan Valley, has rocketed from just 17 wineries in 1990 to almost 300 today. New wineries are opening all the time and range from mom-and-pop vineyards to upscale operations like Mission Hill Family Estate, founded in 1981 by Anthony von Mandl, who modeled his winery after that of his mentor, Robert Mondavi. Mission Hill Family Estate offers numerous winery tours and tastings, including a private sommelier-guided tour, which you can cap off with an alfresco lunch at Terrace Restaurant with suggested pairings from the winery’s cellar. Other great wineries to visit include Meyer Family Vineyards for French-style Burgundy, Fitzpatrick Family Vineyards for bubblies, Kitsch Wines for Pinot Noir and Tantalus Vineyards for Chardonnay, Pinot Noir and a delectable, strawberry-hued sparkler.

Given the valley’s excellent wines, it’s no surprise you’ll find stellar restaurants, particularly in Kelowna. A few to consider include Waterfront Café for superb coffee, pastries and hearty pre-wine tasting breakfasts, like the crispy shredded potato cake topped with gruyere, bacon, poached eggs and white pepper gravy. Salt & Brick offers excellent wines to pair with comforting bites like mushroom-egg toasts and house-made charcuterie, while Micro Bar & Bites, a snug spot with a central bar, tantalizes with tapas like branzino crudo and duck crostini (don’t miss the duck fat popcorn). Waterfront Restaurant channels the current season with specialties like halibut with lentil gnocchi and Bouchons Bistro serves classic French favorites like cassoulet and steak tartare.

Celebrating your union in the Okanagan Valley offers you and your beloved a chance to explore a unique and strikingly beautiful part of the world. You’ll find outdoor adventure, fabulous food and endless opportunities to fill your glass with superb wines to toast your new life together.

Kelowna International Airport offers easy nonstop access from such hubs as Toronto and Seattle, Washington.

Picturesque Positano Wedding

Kara and Zlaja married in the spring in perhaps the most picturesque location across the globe: Positano, Italy. Their mutual love of travel and adventure inspired their decision for destination nuptials, and the breathtaking views of the Amalfi Coast did not disappoint.

“We wanted a destination with character and history,” the bride says. “When traveling from Sorrento to Amalfi, you’ll notice the vibrantly colorful homes and restaurants that were built into the cliffs of Positano. They have a look and charm of their own, and when we came across Villa San Giacomo, we just thought it looked like something out of a dream.”

For the couple, incorporating Japanese and Bosnian elements into their Italian wedding was important to them in order to symbolize the blending of cultures taking place by becoming husband and wife. The bride folded 1,001 origami paper cranes to string throughout the garden for good fortune — an homage to the Senbazuru tradition — and their families prepared homemade baklava for dessert.

Neither Kara nor Zlaja had ever traveled to Positano prior to the wedding, but luckily for Kara, her background in tourism and event management came in handy. As the wedding planner for her own wedding, the bride handled currency exchange rates, time differences and communication with Italian vendors. The manager at Villa San Giacomo also assisted in ensuring everything went according to plan.

“Planning a destination wedding comes with its own challenges, but overall, it is one of the most unique ways to experience your special day and blend families and friends together,” the bride says.

The intimate guest list of just under 30 of their closest friends and family members allowed the couple to optimize their budget to create “the vacation of a lifetime,” as the bride called it. This contributed to a smaller overall price tag than if they had stayed local for their big day.

“It probably would have been a much larger wedding, more expensive and less like ‘us,’ as we share a passion for travel and culture that would’ve been harder to authenticate in the US,” the bride says.

Although hosting a destination wedding comes with its challenges, the couple couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else. For Kara and Zlaja, experiencing the essence of Positano together on their wedding day was the perfect way to say “I do.”

“It was so surreal having dinner with everyone on a 300-year-old terrace overlooking Positano,” the bride says. “I still can’t believe it happened, and we have very special memories that will be with everyone for a lifetime. It was truly magical.”

Captivating Bahamas Real Wedding

Having met in an adventurous setting (on a Grouse Moor in Scotland), Stephanie and Matthew could only dream of having an untraditional wedding in the tropical paradise of Eleuthera, Bahamas.

Their 33 guests were elated to attend the island where Stephanie sent so much time as a child. Luckily, with the help of a stellar planner, Marva Munroe, the couple was able to remain elated along with their guests.

“If we were going to get married in an island setting, it was the perfect place to do so,” the couple says.

On the day of the wedding, the girls stayed in one of the gorgeous villas at The Cove. They enjoyed champagne, getting ready and sharing in uncontrollable laughter. Meanwhile, the men lounged in the bar having a ball playing a mean game of Scrabble.

With high spirits and perfect weather (the hot humidity blew away to an airy ocean breeze right before the ceremony) Stephanie walked down the aisle focusing on the man she’d meet at the end of it. The setting provided a breath-taking backdrop for the couple and their guests to take in the beautiful joining of two hearts.

After the ceremony, the crew enjoyed cocktails, a photoshoot and later a dinner that overlooked an infinity pool and the ocean. The night led to cake and dancing, but for Stephanie, the moment frozen in time was when her new husband Matthew leaned over and shared a loving word and a look that she’d never forget.

The bride says a piece of advice she got was to wear a watch, “because the day flies by…and, it really does. As a wedding gift my mother-in-law gave me a gorgeous watch that my late father-in-law used to wear. I wore that all day, felt like we had a part of him with us on the day.”
