An Atlanta Destination Wedding

Hosting a destination wedding doesn’t have to mean grabbing your passport and hitting the friendly skies to cross the big blue. For example, Atlanta is thriving – the commercial development is evident in the ever-changing skyline, it’s home to the world’s busiest airport and it is even challenging Los Angeles as a mecca of the film industry.

For couples considering saying their “I do’s” in the ATL, we can’t say enough about the 151-room, AAA Five Diamond St. Regis Atlanta. Thirty minutes from the airport and located in the uber-chic neighborhood of Buckhead, the St. Regis has all the luxe you would expect of the brand, but with a hip nightlife to boot. The St. Regis Bar is the place to see and be seen and you’ll find a packed patio full of young, stylish locals enjoying a Saturday night under the stars. To kick-off your wedding weekend, the Jazz Legends series on Thursday nights is a can’t-miss. Sip on a signature St. Regis Bloody Mary (Atlanta’s version includes pickled okra) and listen to soulful Jazz as guests buzz about who’s on-site tonight (Freddy Cole, Nat King Cole’s brother, was in attendance during my visit).

When it comes to accommodations, be sure to book one of the airy St. Regis Suites, complete with oversized bathrooms and living rooms – ideal for bustling bridesmaids. For your wedding, the St. Regis boasts beautiful outdoor space – a rarity in downtown Atlanta. The Grand Terrace is a clean slate for your ceremony with sophisticated landscaping and lovely architecture. After your “I do’s,” move downstairs to the Astor Ballroom and enjoy another large patio, chic carpets and dramatic crystal chandeliers. The hotel only hosts one wedding a day, so you’ll have the entire wing to yourself, complete with private restrooms and a coat check.

As an added bonus, with the hotel just blocks from famous shopping on Peachtree Road and some of the hottest restaurants in town, your guests can leave their cars with the friendly valet indefinitely. After enjoying the St. Regis’ famous Afternoon Tea, ride your caffeine high and hit the town to explore all that this Southern city has to offer. Head down to Centennial Olympic Park and you’ll find the Georgia Aquarium (don’t miss the whale sharks!), World of Coca-Cola, the College Football Hall of Fame and the Center for Civil and Human Rights all within walking distance. To encourage your guests to explore, you would be wise to recommend an Atlanta CityPass, which grants admission to lots of the major attractions at a discounted price.

Hosting your destination wedding at the high-end St. Regis Atlanta comes at a price, but there’s invaluable benefit to the social scene, amazing location and endless city activities.

Horseshoe Bay Lake Wedding

Horseshoe Bay Lake Wedding

Erin and Kyle knew they wanted a destination wedding. The only question was: where? Kyle wanted somewhere he could golf and Erin wanted to be near a coast. Because both of the couple’s families are spread out, they knew travel would be necessary for almost the entire guest list.

The couple’s families were overjoyed with their decision for a destination wedding.

The pair originally started planning a destination wedding in Hawaii, but soon realized one of the most important factors about the wedding day was convenience for their guests. Having their wedding at Horseshoe Bay, Texas was more accessible for everyone.

Erin and Kyle didn’t visit Horseshoe Bay before making their decision, but Horseshoe Bay Resort included everything the couple was looking for.

An issue the pair had to face during their planning was the construction of the hotel. The couple was told a large portion of the site was going to be undergoing renovations when they booked it. However, Horseshoe Bay worked hard to get it done and finished the construction the morning of our ceremony, the pair says.

The newlyweds described their destination wedding planning experience as great. The bride thought planning was going to be difficult and viewed it as a daunting task. The hardest part for the pair was picking the venue, because they couldn’t decide on a location. Erin and Kyle found it comforting to be away from the site and to plan remotely.

Horseshoe Bay sent the couple a list of preferred vendors. The bride and groom then chose their vendors based on the hotel’s referrals and online reviews. Coordinating with the vendors went smoothly, says the couple.

To maintain a stress-free environment, the bride did not include any DIY projects. Her sister’s friend designed their menus and the bride’s mom printed them.

The travel logistics for the guests didn’t prove to be an issue. The resort was far from the major airports, leading everyone to rent a car because the shuttle service was more expensive. Although renting a car was an extra expense, the guests didn’t mind because the weekend was like a lake vacation for everyone.

The newlyweds say they spent the same amount of money if they had their wedding closer to home. The couple doesn’t regret their destination wedding because it “wouldn’t have felt like such a fun vacation!”

The best advice the newlyweds have is to stress as little as possible and just have fun. “It is an incredible feeling to have so many people that you love all together in the same room,” says the happy couple.

BUYING A WEDDING DRESS FROM CHINA

BUYING A WEDDING DRESS FROM CHINA

Because you occasionally hear stories from people who ordered dresses from
China and had everything go reasonably well, it’s easy to harbor a secret hope that ordering directly from China means that you’re ordering a lower-cost version of a designer dress, made in the same factory. Unfortunately, this is not the case. It’s often unclear exactly who is making these dresses (though it is clear they are very poorly paid), but it’s not the same factories churning mass-market wedding dresses, or even factories with any quality control to speak of. In short, there are better ways to snag a wedding dress for $200 or $300.

A Must-Have Travel Jacket

Traveling for your destination wedding and honeymoon are both exciting and stressful times, especially when trying to make sure you have all your travel essentials within arm’s length. The BauBax Travel Bomber Jacket, which features fifteen built-in travel essentials, frees up your hands and makes organization for your trip a breeze.

DID’s editor in chief raves about the functionality of the jacket and the ability to travel without a purse. The jacket tends to get heavier the more you fill the pockets, but keeps its sleek fit without appearing bulky. We also want to note that the jacket runs small, so we recommend ordering one size up.

According to BauBax, creators Hiral Sanghavi and Yoganshi Shah wanted to solve as many travel problems as they could in one jacket without adding unwanted bulk.

The bomber-style design includes a built-in eye mask, inflatable neck pillow, gloves, a stylus/pen attached to the zipper and various pockets designated for your travel essentials such as your phone, passport, portable charger, etc.

The modern, travel friendly jacket is available for both men and women and sells for $149.99 on thegrommet.com.

French Château Destination Wedding

French Château Destination Wedding

Biñe and Kenan had a mutual love for France from the start. They both lived in the beautiful country at one point before getting engaged by Paris’ famous Eiffel Tower. So, when it came to deciding where to hold a destination wedding, it was a no-brainer.

“Since we have had the opportunity to live in many cities during our lives, a lot of our friends and family are spread out all over the map and this beautiful country happened to be somewhat geographically central to all,” the couple says.

The two knew they wanted to create a fairy tale wedding in none other than a 17th century French château. The duo then found Château de Bourron and fell in love with its classic elegance and timeless romance.

The actual execution of their French destination wedding vision wasn't easy, though. Luckily, the couple says they couldn’t have found more talented vendors to help make sure every personalized detail came together perfectly.

“The personalization aspect is what made it all worthwhile and we were thrilled to hear several of our guests comment that they had never been to a wedding like ours before,” the bride says.

Biñe and Kenan say they prepared travel logistics as soon as their wedding date was locked in. They checked for big events during that weekend and helped block hotel reservations far in advance for guests. Because many guests would be traveling cross-country to come, the couple reminded all attendees to check their visa requirements and passport expiration dates far in advance.

The pair says, “We also presented them with all the corresponding transportation tips and even arranged shuttles with multiple pick-up and drop-off schedules throughout the wedding day for their convenience.”

When the ceremony day arrived, so did the sun, so when guests arrived, they received wooden hand fans that were engraved with the couple’s initials and the date of the big day.

Other unique details that customized Biñe and Kenan’s wedding were included in the grand reception salon. In fact, guests found their place cards in cork holders that the couple had saved from bottles of wine the two of them enjoyed together throughout their relationship. The table numbers were also labelled onto bottles of one of the duo’s favorite Bordeaux reds.

Overall, the couple says the details of their French fairy tale day came together smoothly due to meeting over video chats with their vendors.

“E-mail is often convenient, but we strongly recommend to grab the phone and use Skype or FaceTime to TALK to your vendors,” the two say.

Plant Your Legacy at ‘Alohilani Resort

Plant Your Legacy at ‘Alohilani Resort
Commemorate Your Special Day by Planting a Legacy Tree

Hawaiians have a name for their deep connection to the earth: aloha ‘aina. It describes a kinship with the land, a love that is absolute and protective – the feeling you might have for your beloved. This ancient bond dates back millennia, to when these islands were blanketed with lush forests filled with unique native species. Felling a tree was done with purpose and respect, and the spirit of the tree was carried through to the product it created: the towering koa was used to make canoes and surfboards, sandalwood was prized as a perfume and milo was carved into bowls and instruments.

Over the centuries, these hardwood forests were decimated to make way for sugarcane and pineapple plantations, their magnificent wood exported to make high-priced furniture. Some species nearly disappeared.

Today, ʻAlohilani Resort is proud to play a role in bringing those forests back. Residing on the land where Queen Lili’uokalani’s beachside cottage once stood, ‘Alohilani is honoring her legacy by partnering with Hawaiian Legacy Reforestation Initiative (HLRI) to return 100,000 treasured native trees and restore Hawaii’s natural ecosystem.

As our guest, you contribute to that effort. We add a $5 “tree fee” to each stay that goes straight to HLRI’s thriving reforestation program. On the Big Island, HLRI has already planted 400,000 trees on 1,200 acres – designated as the first Gold Standard Certified Forest Carbon Credit in North America by the World Wildlife Fund, and to date the only koa carbon credit in the world. The forest is pumping clean oxygen into the atmosphere at an astonishing rate: one koa tree alone can offset a weeklong vacation for a family of four.

We invite you to take part in your own tree-planting ceremony within the ʻAlohilani Forest on Oahu. Guests who plant a tree – to commemorate your wedding, as a gift to your partner or in honor of a loved one – can track their tree throughout their lifetime. Each of the trees planted are tagged with an individual radio-frequency identification chip that records everything from their genetic make-up and health to the story of their planting. It’s living proof of your love: the essence of aloha ‘aina with a modern twist.

Book your special ‘Alohilani experience today with our Grand Opening Offer: Rates starting at $290 for an Ocean View room.
