Honeymoon Overwater Bungalows

Get the Epic Experience without the Jet Lag

There is nothing more romantic than an overwater bungalow honeymoon. And while the South Pacific and the Maldives are the reigning hot spots for bungalow vacations, not everyone can stomach the long flight or take time off for the trek across the world for this travel bucket-list level vacation.

Fortunately, there are plenty of ways to enjoy this experience without having to endure the dreaded jet lag. For those wishing to stay closer to home, here are our top choices for nearby bungalow resorts that deliver the full luxury of living above water in half the travel time.

Cayo Espanto, Belize

As one of the original overwater bungalow resorts in Belize, Cayo Espanto is located on a private island in Ambergis Caye and provides the kind of 5-star pampering and privacy that honeymooners crave. Everything at this resort is meant to inspire a feeling of being cast away on your own remote island. Each of the resident couples is assigned to their own private butler who will bring top-shelf drinks, set up beachside dining, and help couples recuperate after an exhilarating wedding season. With seven beachfront villas to choose from, those wishing to be directly over water should book Casa Ventanas. Meal preferences are noted before arrival, so expect to have all your favorites stocked and ready, with the local private chef creating a bespoke gourmet menu based on your palette. Nor will this location require a mammoth departure from your time zone, with a quick five-hour flight to Belize and then onto either a private helicopter or quick domestic flight to reach this unspoiled paradise.

Rosewood Mayakoba, Mexico

Located on a gorgeous stretch of Riviera Maya coast just a quick flight from the US, Rosewood Mayakoba's Deluxe Overwater Lagoon Suites are the answer to every honeymooner’s bungalow dreams. While there are no actual stilts to be seen, each unit provides an inviting lounge terrace with a private plunge pool and spectacular views of lagoons and mangroves. It’s easy to see why some people call this resort “The Venice of Mexico.” New arrivals are taken to their room by boat on the winding network of canals and lagoons throughout the resort. We especially love the swim-up access from the lagoons and Mescal as a welcome drink is a cherry on top of this tropical dessert. Whether you want to laze around your personal Lagoon Suite, enjoy one of the best golf courses in Eastern Mexico, or take a 10-minute ride to enjoy the lively nightlife of nearby Playa del Carmen, a stay at Mayakoba will be a honeymoon worthy of its own photo album.

Sandals Royal Caribbean, Jamaica

The closest you will ever get to Bora Bora without flying there, there’s a good reason why the Sandals Royal Caribbean Jamaica overwater bungalows are booked two years in advance. The 17 butler-serviced units are set in a heart-shape formation along a wooden walkway, with some guests swearing by the suite on the outer perimeter of the dock where you can connect to the ocean views without seeing another soul for days. Should you ever decide to come up for air, couples can enjoy all the amenities of this resort including the seven restaurants, many small beaches (including a clothing-optional section.) Each overwater suite features glass vision floor panels that connect you to the marine life and are lit at night to ensure 24/7 enjoy undersea viewing. Couples can also admire the beauty of the ocean from their private infinity-edge pool or while relaxing in the floating overwater hammocks. As part of the all-inclusive arrangement here, two round-the-clock butlers will arrange to deliver anything guests need, including all meals, select spa services and recreational activities directly to your bungalow.

Amanyara Resorts, Turks & Caicos

While not technically made up of “bungalows,” Amanyara’s open-air pavilions are an ideal compromise for those wanting to be right near water while enjoying the Eastern-based hospitality Aman properties are known for. The Ocean Cove Pavilions are our favorite, offering direct access to the beach should you decide to jump into the azure waters. The rest of the Pavilions are nestled in coastal vegetation overlooking ponds and are equally as impressive. Here, one wakes up in complete seclusion, surrounded by lagoons and tropical wildlife with only the salamanders, frogs, and sea birds as your nearest companions. Floor-to-ceiling glass doors open to a combined bedroom and living area which includes a refreshing plunge pool in select rooms. Guests can tool around the expansive resort on bikes or golf carts and would do well to book the spa as it is known for being one of the most luxurious in the area. Beachside dining is also available here, with a famed Japanese restaurant and a weekly upscale beach BBQ offering a ceviche bar and grill complete with lobster and freshly caught fish. There is also a movie theater on premises in case the weather fails to cooperate.

Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort, Florida

While some honeymooners wouldn’t dream of spending their honeymoon in a child-friendly Disney resort, others will relish the chance to unleash their inner kid at these overwater villas located in the happiest place on earth. Boasting the shortest distance to experience your South Seas adventure, it’s easy to feel transported here with unique design elements reflecting a Polynesian spirit. With large ample suits featuring two bedrooms and two bathrooms, most couples will have plenty of room to spread out. There are even a fully stocked kitchen and washer and dryer. The bungalows also offer the best views of the Disney park fireworks which can be watched right from your deck while lounging on a rattan swing or while dipping in your own private plunge pool, which is a nice feature since the resort’s pool can get overrun by kids and families. Easy access to Epcot Center and Magic Kingdom via the monorail is perfect for honeymooners looking to add some excitement to their vacation.

Unique Destination Wedding Dresses

Florence isn’t just a city of romance, it’s a mecca for hi-fashion and picture-worthy hotspots. Whether you’re planning a wedding in Italy or far from it, these gowns by Jules Bly are sure show-stoppers for any destination wedding.

Get a first-hand look into this styled gown shoot in the gorgeous streets and gardens of Florence from the designer herself!

Dress: “Diamonds a Dozen” | Location: Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore

Duomo Di Firenze made a dramatic backdrop with its gothic style, giant wooden doors and polychrome panels of various shades of green and pink marble. Diamonds a Dozen features a diamond of Hand-loomed, hand-beaded French Guipure Lace. A front split reveals just the perfect amount of leg and nude-colored lining. The plunging back is accentuated with same French lace, also hand beaded with tiny silver flocked seed beads and Japanese Pearls.

Dress: “Fall From Lace” | Location: Ponte Vecchio / The Streets of Firenze

“Fall from Lace” is wooing brides-to-be all over Europe and as life imitates art, the early morning shoot on the bridge looking back to the Ponte Vecchio, several photographers who were positioned on the bridge to catch the magical early morning light reflecting in the Arno could hardly believe their luck when a beautiful model in a beautiful gown showed up to delight not only them, also the crowds that were beginning to wake up and pass by. As we shot- and the long lensed photographers shot our shoot (yes, they asked and we agreed), people gathered to watch what they thought must be a celebrity wedding. The passers-by thought our new friends were paparazzi. Silk Faille gives a heavy drape to the full circle of Fall from Lace. The long-sleeved bodice is adorned with hand-loomed French laces, Guipure lace flowers are cut and re appliqued to create a three-dimensional texture. The square plunging back nestles snugly against the waist giving an illusion of a teeny-tiny waist.

Dresses: “Let’s Slip Away” (Gown) “Icing on the Cape” (Caplette) | Location: Giardino Bardini

There is something uniquely dreamy and romantic about the views over Florence from the hills of Oltrarno on a stunning Spring morning. Without doubt one of the best views in all of Toscana. The Villa Bardini opened only recently to the public and its Italian Renaissance garden was the perfect fit for “Lets Slip Away” a simply elegant Pure Silk Charmeuse wrap, bias-cut gown. Introducing “Icing on the Cape” with its soft drape gave a delicate touch of hand-loomed French Lace. The luxurious fluidity of “Lets Slip Away” contrasted spectacularly against the pillars, stairways and statues of the Giardino Bardini.

All my gowns are created in my studio and handcrafted with passion and attention to every detail. With an eye to comfort and wear-ability, they are also Eco-sensitive helping to keep microfibers out of our Eco-systems, waters ways and oceans. Let your senses guide you. You'll know when you find the gown of your dreams.

Stunning Cabo Destination Wedding

"You gotta risk it for the biscuit," or so they say. Beginning wedding planning may have you reeling, but take it from a couple who said their “I do’s” in beautiful Cabo, Mexico, whatever risks taken are often more than worth it to have the wedding of your dreams.

Eric and Katy didn't need to question whether or not they wanted a destination wedding. They loved the idea from the start for the same reason so many couples decide to go abroad for their special day: the adventure of it all!

“There is something so adventurous and romantic about a destination wedding.  Eric and I love Mexico and the family-oriented culture. Not to mention how fun and beautiful Cabo is,” Katy says.

Luckily, most of the guests invited felt the same way. The concept of having a multiple-day celebration with all of their friends and family in an incredible place was “not a hard thing to sell,” the couple says. However, the massive amounts of planning and coordinating that lied ahead after the announcement initially felt daunting.

Fortunately, for the bride, a supportive maid of honor and stellar wedding coordinator helped change anxiety to excitement. “I was able to work stress-free in the months leading up to the event and felt as though I had a clear-headed teammate in the process,” Katy says.

Beyond providing a coordinator, Esperanza resort had the ideal accommodations for practically all of the couple's needs and wishes. With the property being located just 25 minutes from San Jose del Cabo International Airport, choosing the venue was a no-brainer. Not to mention, the ability to enjoy stunning clifftop terraces overlooking the sea and the resort’s own private beach.

Although the couple spent more for a higher tax rate and costs for shipping items, they ended up saving money in the long run because of the inherently smaller guest list. This yielded a more intimate and personal experience, which was another important thing to Eric and Katy.

“You have that feeling of being away and letting go of your day-to-day routine like you’re on vacation. Except you know it’s a vacation leading the most incredible day of your life,” the couple says.

With the dream team of vendors, coordinators and guests, the couple felt confident throughout their entire stay in Mexico and on the big day.

Maui Garden-Beach Wedding

The bride always imagined having a garden-themed wedding but also loved the beach. Therefore, she married the two to marry her one-and-only! A destination wedding to Maui, Hawaii not only fit the couple’s wishes perfectly, but an old plantation house on the island yielded a posh garden-party by the sea.

Hazel and Dominic’s first visit to Maui introduced them to their dream venue, Olowalu Plantation House. Meant for small weddings, the house provided ideal intimacy for the island event. Part of the reason the couple chose a destination wedding was to spend ample time with their guests. Plus, it ended up being a great vacay get-together.

“Some of our favorite memories were made during the days leading up to the wedding and after. It really did feel like a week-long vacation with all of our favorite people together! Those moments are irreplaceable. It just wouldn’t feel the same if we had our wedding locally,” the pair say.

Suggesting a few hotel accommodations and allowing guests to create their own itineraries allowed the couple time to focus on planning from afar.

“Since we were planning our wedding from afar,” the bride says, “we had to rely a lot on referrals, reviews we gathered online and we had to put a lot of trust into our wedding coordinator to guide us in the right direction.”

Constant communication through email or phone call kept a clear track of vision and needs over the year-long planning process. Additionally, the advanced timeline gave the couple time to do some research and build a relationship with their wedding planner.

In the long run, they built a plan for a stunning event that led to a once-in-a-lifetime vacation all in one! And the best part: they ended up saving money in comparison to ceremony back home, “because it limited our guest count to a manageable size,” the two say.

The bride admits, the process brought stress, but it all paid off to score a Maui seaside garden rondeaux!

5 Ways to Sculpt Your Honeymoon Abs

Let’s talk abs.

There are hundreds of ways that will allegedly get you sculpted abs, but what we really want to get down to the nitty gritty of is the core. Much in the same way that the core of an apple keeps the fruit intact, the core of our bodies are our source of strength and movement. Without this strengthen and stabilization, a flat stomach is nearly impossible.

Working the core requires total-body focus, good form, and movements that stretch and elongate the stomach. And surprisingly, this doesn’t come from two of the most popular exercises: planks and crunches.

First, planks are supposed to put all the weight in your core, allowing you to tighten and squeeze the abs for an extended period of time. But most of us aren’t doing planks the way they’re intended. Instead of putting the focus on the abs, it’s easy to load up the arms and legs, or strain the shoulders or neck in the process. Similarly, crunches and sit ups put a lot of strain on the back and spine instead of actually targeting the abdominal muscles.

That’s not to say that you need to abandon these moves altogether. Instead, it’s important to weave in moves that fully activate the core and work to tone the ab muscles from all angles. The moves ahead are the best way to get flat, toned abs - with no crunches or planks in sight.

Front Leg Lift

Stand with right knee bent at 90-degrees in front of you, and a soft bend in the standing leg with fingers interlaced behind your head. Flex your lifted foot, and slowly extend the knee, pressing your right foot out at an angle in front of you. Keeping the foot hovered, slowly rebend the knee, returning to a 90-degree angle at hip height. Repeat 8 reps, then switch legs.

Standing Gate Swing

Stand with right knee bent at 90-degrees in front of you, and a soft bend in the standing leg, fingers interlaced behind your head. Slowly start squeeze from the glute to bring your lifted knee out to the right, keeping a 90-degree bend, and engaging the core to keep balance as you draw the knee back to center. Repeat 8 reps, then switch legs.

Slow Mountain Gliders

Start in a high plank position with each foot on a glider, feet hip distance apart. Slowly start to bring your right knee in towards your chest, but stopping the knee in line with your hips at a 90-degree bend. Slowly press the right leg straight while at the same time bringing the left knee in. Continue to alternate slowly, keeping the feet hips distance apart, for 8 reps on each side.

Bent Knee Taps

Lay with your back firmly on the mat, legs lifted into tabletop with knees at 90-degrees. Keep arms down by your sides and head resting on the mat. Keeping your left leg completely still, lower your right foot half-way down towards the bottom right corner of your mat. Pause, then pull the knee back in to start. Repeat 8 reps, then switch legs. Use with the p.ball for increased intensity.

90-Degree Shift Out

Lay with your back firmly on the mat, legs lifted into tabletop with knees at 90-degrees. Keep arms down by your sides and head resting on the mat. Flex the feet and slowly start to shift the feet forward 1-3 inches without fully extending the knees. Pause, then bring the knees back in line with the hips. Repeat for 8 reps. Use with p.ball for increased intensity.

Destination Scottsdale Wedding

Rachel and Max went into the planning process with one goal in mind: create an intimate time with friends and family that would be cherished forever. Luckily, the duo was able to recruit the help of Rachel’s father, who quickly became their number one cheerleader and someone to help smooth out details. Since the couple did most of their planning from afar, their wedding planner, Jennifer with Imoni Events, was the boots on the ground and turned their vision of Arcadian elegance into reality.

On the day of the wedding, everything came together seamlessly. Vendors delivered a special scene with greenery and succulents everywhere, along with lanterns, candles and copper accents. “[The ceremony began] right as the sun was setting, which lit up the mountains in a way that stunned everyone,” the bride reminisces. “Although there were 170 people watching us, it felt intimate and more special than I could have imagined.”

The two were able to maximize their desert destination wedding experience by kicking off Friday with a fiesta-themed welcome reception, giving guests full access to a hospitality suite and providing a hangout space stocked with food and drinks. They also held a Sunday brunch at a nearby restaurant before everyone left. “Just take it all in,” advise the newlyweds, “As everyone says, it goes by in the blink of an eye. So, every now and then, take a step back and appreciate the little, special and surprising moments.”

Gifting Guide For Bridesmaids

Six Ways to Spoil Your Best Maids

What are some of the best gifts for bridesmaids that they’ll actually use? We did a quick round-up of a few fun items that run the gamut of cool clutches, gorgeous dresses and even linens for your best gal pals.

1. Dress rehearsal

Plum Pretty Sugar is one of the brands you’ll see us touting for their fun robes (see below for more on that). But did you know they also make beautiful dresses perfect for destination weddings? I recently was sent one to try Lottie Dress in Kiss Mix and wore it to a rehearsal dinner in Maui. It couldn’t have been more perfect for the event and the fabric was flattering, easy to care for and lucky for me, I got compliments all night long. $98

2. YOU get luxury linens, and YOU get luxury linens…

Why is the couple the only one getting bedding for the wedding? And who doesn’t love a fresh set of sheets? One of our current favorites is Gryphon. Their soft as a rose petal sheets and pillowcases will put you into dreamland in ten seconds flat. New linens might be something you’ve registered for, but consider giving it as a gift to your bridesmaids who take bedtime seriously. Prices vary.

3. Bring home the smell of paradise

Having just visited Tahiti and recalling the amazing scents that are so indicative to the destination, the minute I received Marine + Vine’s Tahitian Oil, my olfactory memories went into overdrive and I was mentally transported right back to paradise. I highly recommend spraying the oil right out of the shower for maximum benefit. The nourishing oil provides an instant glow and the scent stays with you from morning until night. This is the perfect gift for those bridesmaids traveling with you to a tropical destination, even if it’s not Tahiti. $62

4. The last clutch you’ll ever own

Modjewel created a clutch that allows you to switch out the sides and clasp to create different looks for any occasion. The sides adhere to the clutch with magnets, so the bag is rather heavy, however changing your look is as easy as 1, 2, 3. The versatility of the bag and quality craftsmanship provides your ladies with long-lasting style. Bare Bag kits start at $228. Additional covers, straps and clasps are extra.

5. The ultimate yoga mat

As most true “yogis” will tell you, not all yoga mats are created equally. Being an avid yoga lover, I would agree with this sentiment. Some mats are too thin, or even too thick. Some aren’t great for hot yoga and others can feel cheap. Big Raven Yoga not only created a yoga mat that can go from a Bikram class to Nidra, but they did it with fun patterns that you can customize for the yogi in your wedding party. $107

6. Getting ready robes that they’ll actually wear again

Getting ready photos just aren’t complete without the wedding party in matching robes. Am I right? As a bit of a self-proclaimed robe snob, I have to say, a bell-sleeved scratchy robe, no matter how cute the pattern, just isn’t going to be my go-to day-to-day and will likely end up sitting in my closet long after that photo is taken. Do your maids a favor and shop the Plum Pretty Sugar robe collection. They are silky soft, lightweight and perfectly fitting. Shop by fabric, color and length to ensure you get the perfect match for your lady pals. Prices vary.

Spanish Wedding Inspiration

Perhaps you’re in love with a certain location abroad, but having a destination wedding far, far away isn’t in the cards. This stunning photoshoot combines the talents of top innovative wedding vendors to inspire couples to integrate tastes and styles of their favorite cities/ countries abroad. The photographer, Erica Melissa, shares the details of this Pin-able Spanish shoot below.

The beautiful city of Seville, Spain was the inspiration behind this shoot. From the sour oranges and grapes hanging from the trees to the delicious wine & famous flamenco dancing, ideas come to life.

A Spanish Monastery located in Miami, Florida provided the backdrop. The Monastery in itself has an incredible story and history as the structure was dismantled stone by stone from Spain and flown into the United States. This made it an easy choice as the backdrop for this editorial.

A Spanish guitar waits to be opened by guests to reveal their table number, a key element in the welcome design. The custom escort card envelopes display the various cities in Spain, strung using leather and sealed with a copper wax. The lighting design was created to mimic the design displayed in the famous Seville Fair that takes place every April. In the stationery suite, you will find a mini replica of traditional brass bells found in the churches.

Yummy Chori created an incredible and beautiful tapas table that included many traditional foods and beverages that you would find in Seville including Spanish omelets, olives, chorizo, churros and their famous sangria. For the tablescape, was a stunning earthy chic design of texture including vines & hops with grapes arching over mixed florals, bold red candles in mini terra-cotta vases, sour oranges with a clean plate design. Unique plates added a hint of antique gold and the flat wear was a matte finish. Sitting on each plate was a mini-mosaic Spanish tile adorned with a place card and natural linen napkin lined with gold beads.

The wedding gown was a beautiful classic design by Made with Love and styled with an elegant Spanish lace veil, while the tux was a bold blue classic tuxedo with a velvet custom lapel and bow tie to create a more refined groom look.

Follow the team that made it all happen for more inspiration and information on this Spain-influenced, styled shoot.
